And some amazing new screens

At some undetermined time ‘next week’, you’ll be able to pre-purchase the game (you have to pay in full I think) on Steam. The reason you would want to do this is you will immediately get to play the full Counter Strike: Source. Now, HL2 still doesn’t even have a goddamn release date, but maybe it will once this Next Week arrives. Rumors are Nov. 23

Purchase options:

Retail Boxes

* Standard Edition — includes HL2 and CS:Source. Ships on six CDs, in one of three box-art packages (Gordon, Alyx or the G-Man),
* Collector’s Edition — includes Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source, a Half-Life 2 T-shirtand a Prima book sampler. Ships on a single DVD.

Steam Packages

* Bronze — HL2* and CS:Source.
* Silver — HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve’s back catalog currently available on Steam.
* Gold — HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve’s back catalog currently available on Steam, Complete Strategy Guide from Prima Games, 3 different Half-Life 2 posters, Half-Life 2 hat, Half-Life 2 postcard, Half-Life 2 stickers, Half-Life 2 Soundtrack CD, Chance to win a trip to Valve! (1 trip offered for every 5000 Gold packages purchased).

*To be made available upon product’s release.

I’ve got Steam, and have downloaded all the HL2 pre-load so far. I’ll be purchasing it as soon as they start taking credit card info.

Oh, and if any of you have Steam, be sure to download the free side-scrolling game Codename: Gordon. It’s based on the HL2 story, and is a fun little action side-scroller.

kinda curious as to how cool half-life source (hl #1) will be with whatever technological terror they used to update it. don’t really care for counterstrike.

Yeah I’m looking forward to playing Half Life 1: Source too. This review has just totally hyped me up for this game more than before, now can we please have a confirmed release date? And pleaaase don’t make it November the 9th.

ample time to save up to upgrade your computers (if you hadn’t already done so for doom 3).

that binks(?) video still amazes me.

So Day of Defeat Source won’t be available in any of the boxed packages?

I’m all for new ways of purchasing games and preventing piracy, but I refuse to download a full version of a game as I won’t feel like I actually own it. I need a hardcopy. I’d hate to download it all over again after a reformat (something I find myself doing way too much). The DVD version will be a no brainer for me, but I am baffled why it doesn’t include Day of Defeat.

Is Valve going to charge for additional Steam downloads like Day of Defeat? I never got to play the original for I had a terrible dial up connection during its prime where even downloading it was out of the question. While I’ll gladly purchase it, I just wish I could have it on a disk.

Oh well this is a minor nitpick as I’ll defend Valve until the end. I can’t believe the childish fits some of the online communities are throwing over the delays. People should be used to game delays, they suck, but they happen. Though what else would you expect from non CHUD forums?

I’ll be thrilled if it comes out soon and will look forward to be playing CS and DoD online with you bastards.

You know, I’m quite the opposite. I reformat my computer quite often (don’t ask), and being able to simply login to STEAM and download and install an up to date version of Counter-Strike without rummaging for my CDKEY or finding a decent torrent for the update was a godsend.

Though, perhaps I feel this way because I have a 3Mb/1Mb connection.

Any plans for this on the Xbox? I’m new to the Xbox, and never paid attention to that angle.
Sure, I could play it on my 20" LCD…or I could play it with the Xbox on a 65", if it’ll be available.

It’s coming the the XBox… eventually… if they feel like it…

Valve has stated that they won’t even consider working on the port until the PC version ships. Vivendi Universal, the publisher, maintains that an XBox port is in the works (Valve and VU aren’t exactly chummy at the moment; in fact, they’re suing each other).

This probably means that Valve is expected to begin attempting to port the game after Half-Life 2 finally goes gold. The fact that they haven’t made the XBox a priority through the development process is bad news. Who knows whether XBox can handle the Source engine in any form? Or if it can run the engine, will it be a 15 fps slide-show? I suspect that if we ever do get the game on the Box, it’ll be a severely stripped down version (graphically) running a limited Source build. That means you can probably kiss some of the cool physics effects and destructible environments away.

More likely, I think that Valve will realize all the effort it would take to port to XBox will only produce a second-rate game, and simply say “Screw this”.

I have a great net connection, downloading isn’t that big of a deal. It boils down to that physical copy…though I wonder if your CD key will allow you to download it anyways? Plus I’m very organized so I wouldnt be rummaging through much to get to it.

Want… this…game…now.

That makes sense, as the power and chipset of XB2 will be more than capable of keeping up with the game’s graphics engine and physics. I also bet that the XB2 version of the game will include more features than the initial PC version, ala DOOM 3.

I’m finding it hard for some reason to get amped for this game. I liked the first one, but not as much as everyone else. Anyway, hope it doesn’t suck.

Eurgamer Article from Yesterday.

The long, drawn-out Half-Life 2 release date saga appears to be drawing to a close at long last, with Vivendi-Universal Games’ expected to formally announce a November 26th release date for Europe, with US gamers getting the game three days earlier on November 23rd.

Valve delivered a release candidate to VU on September 15th, and although an official ‘Gold’ announcement has still yet to emerge while final QA testing at VU continues, Eurogamer understands that VU informed its UK retail partners this week of the expected release dates, having previously been fearful of not being able to release the game until early next year.

Indeed, recent news of ongoing legal wranglings between VU and developer Valve made talk of further delays look increasingly likely, although the company could ill afford to miss out on the lucrative Christmas opportunity for such an important game.

With marketing plans taking months of preparation and Christmas space at a premium, it was essential VU made retail aware of its plans - even though official confirmation is dependent on the game meeting QA standards.

When contacted for confirmation, Valve’s Doug Lombardi was still unable to shed further light on the matter, uttering the immortal words: “Unfortunately, I do not have a release date from VUG right now,” no doubt under orders to wait until it’s ‘officially’ announced.

Meanwhile a VU Games source told Eurogamer this morning: “There is a good chance Half-Life 2 will make it before this Christmas. We’re targeting the holiday season”, adding that until it physically had a gold master it couldn’t set an exact date. Nevertheless, the publisher is clearly confident behind the scenes that it can make the pre-Christmas rush, with marketing plans being prepared.

It’s expected that European gamers will be offered the same option of a standard 6 CD pack, and a deluxe DVD pack, as announced by Valve eariler this week. It’s not, however, known whether gamers outside of the United States will be able to purchase the game over Steam at the same time as their US counterparts -although given how eager UK and European retailers are to break release dates, it would not be a surprise if the game went on sale this side of the Atlantic on the same day anyway, given that distribution is often in possession of stock a week or more before the on sale date. A game of this sales magnitude has ‘broken street date’ written all over it, and with regulators unable to enforce it, it seems a formality.

On other Half-Life 2 related matters, despite the appearance of print reviews of the game next week in PC Gamer on both sides of the Atlantic (where it has reportedly scored 96%), and PC Zone (which has interestingly been denied the world first review, no doubt as a result of the magazine’s recent sale to Future) online readers are being forced to wait until the day of release before they can read review coverage of the game. Last night, Lombardi confirmed: “The online reviews will be held until the day the game is made available,” with review code understandably being kept within Valve towers until then; Valve wouldn’t want another code leak, now would it?

Good review, sad that Doom 3 and Now Half-Life 2 are done yet we can’t even see new screens from DNF in 2+ years. I would just off myself violently if I was 3Drealms.

It’s true, street release dates are always broken over here, and personally I don’t care. I like broken street dates, and since the US get’s the game 3 days early (2 days for Halo 2) then why the hell make us wait anyway? Where is the harm? Especially when some release date’s here are a complete joke, like Ninja Gaiden coming out here 4 months later, 2 months later for The Suffering, and the 4 Month’s wait for Psi-Ops(which just came out here 2 days ago). As a result I couldn’t care less about broken street dates,

Publisher’s don’t seem to care anyway, the only people I’ve seen speak out about broken release dates are Microsoft and Bungie, saying they will sue the fuck out of anyone who releases Halo 2 early.

EDIT: By the way, did anyone else feel like that Review was just a glorified preview? Hell, I could have written that review just from watching the Bink videos (which it feels like he has done). I think this game will be amazing, but I also think that review is a blatant pay-off. He doesn’t mention anything new, doesn’t even touch on CS source (hasn’t played it?) doesn’t even go as far as mentioning Half Life Source, all he offer’s are some new screenshots. He complains about lack of space, yet one page is just a giant picture of Gordon Freeman.

I frankly am over this game. Too much delays, too many disappointments, and just in general too much competition. I think Valve really screwed themselves over with all the mistakes made in the development of this game (granted all of them werent solely theirs). Anyway, my fall of video gaming begins and ENDS with HALO 2, and i think a few million people will agree with me.

I’m all over HALO 2. But it won’t be the be-all, end-all for me. There are many games on the horizon that I am also looking forward to. I’ll be playing PLENTY of different games this Holiday season and beyond.

The problem with Half-Life 2 is that they had their cumshot back in 2003 and have been unable to get an erection since.

They unveiled that AMAZING footage which wowed the world, which showed off all the cool stuff in the game, declaring that it would be out in 2 months. It wasn’t (and it never was meant to be either, don’t tell me that it’s taken them over another year to do the 2 months work which they had to do to get it out in September 2003) and since then all the footage has been nothing new, same striders, same phsyics gun, it’s not impressive any more, it’s lacking the WOW factor it once had. The hype has been and gone.

Halo 2 on the other hand has had a single, 2 years old, movie of single player footage that isn’t even from an in-game level. They’ve released a handful of screenshots, and a couple of multiplayer movies since, all from the same map. People know next to nothing at all about this game and yet they couldn’t be more excited. The hype has slowly and surely built up and up as new tibits of information are drip-fed, not like Half Life 2 jizzing all over before it’s even undressed.

So… you didn’t read the review, I take it.

I totally agree with the sexual allegory. Half Life 2 was a huge thing for me last fucking year when they blew thier wad with the fantastic footage and gameplay ideas. But now everyone has stolen the game ideas and just got the product out their sooner. I am sure its going to sell like gangbusters, but it isnt going to change the industry like half life 1 did.

Which games exactly stole Half Life 2’s ideas? I haven’t played anything that used it’s materials system, or anything with physics much more advanced than those in Max Payne 2. Same for it’s lip-syncing technology, morphing terrain etc..etc…

This is still my most anticipated game, though I will admit the excitement has gone down since last year. The impact when I finally play it won’t likely be lessened, but I’m not exactly on the edge of my seat desperate to play it anymore either.

Still undecided whether I’m going to get retail or through Steam. I don’t really like the idea of the download method (I like to have a case, a box, a physical manual), but then of course I did it once before with Savage and everything was fine…
Also, neither Counter Strike: Source or Day of Defeat: Source are a factor for me since one sucks and the other is just pretty good for a mod that’s NOT Team Fortress Classic. Both will probably be free eventually anyway.

Fuck it. I just decided to get the retail.

BRING ON HL2 (and Team Fortress 2, please…)!
