Couldn’t find a thread on this. Season starts tonight. The critics have been going crazy about this. I haven’t seen the movie, but everytime I see one of those soft-music ads, I want to scream “Get a fucking life!” I mean, I grew up in a “blue state” and I didn’t play high school football, but the reverent way they are advertising this show adds to my initial impulse to hate everyone on it.
Anyway, thoughts?
the film is very good and the book is great. im hoping its an interesting show…
It’s got Kyle Chandler in it, so the show is doomed. I actually think the guy is an amazing actor and LOVED Early Edition, but the guy just has terrible luck with TV shows.
Still…Im hoping it’s a good show and actually lasts.
If you liked the movie, you will like the show. It had very much the same kind of fell to it. That’s probably due to the fact that Peter Berg is involved ehavily in the show (writing and directing the pilot).
I will definitely be tuning in next week.
Terrible luck with TV shows? Early Edition ran like 4 years, and would’ve run longer if they hadn’t messed with the format.
FNL is off to a pretty good start - really helps to have a big-league director like Berg, who’s obviously invested in the project, come in and hit a home run with the pilot.
The producer, Jason Katims, created My So-Called Life, so he knows good drama.
Music isn’t Explosions in the Sky - but it is Snuffy Walden, who also did Early Edition and is one of the best TV music men out there.
A fantastic show really, but the jiggly cam has got to go. It looks like the camera op has parkinsons. Why does it need to vibrate when two people are talking? It’s ridiculous, it looks like they are in the middle of an Earthquake.
This is just hurtful to the show and I think will turn many viewers off. Using it during the games is fine, but when people are talking, give us a steady shot. It’s called a Steady Cam for a reason.
Otherwise, it’s a great show, I was surprised I bought it considering I hate football like poison.

I loved almost every minute of the show. Spending my teenage years in a small town in Indiana, I’ve seen this kind of reverence for a high school sport and its athletes. The show just seemed honest to me, despite the fact that the ending resembled Varsity Blues a little too much for my tastes. If it stays this good next week, it gets a Season Pass on Tivo.

This is what I mean. Most people are going to feel the same way and say fuck it. Damn shame, it’s a fine show. I totally understand, that jerky shit serves no purpose.

The movie has the shakey cam thing to. It didn’t bother me on the TV show I just kept saying I couldn’t beleive they got away with it. I can see how an audience wouldn’t want that though. This does not fair well for the show.
I’m from Odessa, Tx and in terms of the hysteria that high school football is there, its pretty damn accurate. Especially the kid who maybe paralyzed. That really happened when I went to Permian. The only difference is that the incident happened during a practice and not during a game.
Joe Beene is the dude’s name and he’s even an extra in the movie. I think you can see him in the crowd when Boobie tears his ACL.
I know this sounds absurd, but this kid was pretty much made a MOJO martyr. While its very tragic that he’s going to deal with this paralysis for the rest of his life, but other tragedy was going on at the same time. A kid(Brandon Edward Webster) who was shot and killed while this was going on. It seemed like no one gave two shits about him because he didn’t play football for Permian. Its that crazy
On a lighter note: Kim Smith(the model mostly seen in Maxim)also graduated at permian. She was a grade higher then me.

Early Edition latest four seasons. I’d hardly call that “bad luck.”

And it’s still in syndication in many markets to this day.
I really enjoyed the show. In the first 10 minutes I knew the star QB was gonna get hurt and the bench warmer would become “the man” that a little two Varsity Blues for my liking. Being a football nut I am on board for the first 5 or 6 shows anyways.

i too saw the star being injured, but I kind of liked his character. I was hoping to get more of him healthy, rather than in a hospital bed.
Having the team win also was pretty cliche, but in a season long drama format it sets up a lot of interesting scenarios down the road which most sport movies never bother to deal with.
This is one of the best new shows out and is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
I think the shaky-cam feel is their attempt at giving it a documentary feel. Especially with the continued focus of that NBC reporter and crew.

Fuck man, what’s it like being you? I can only sit here in awe, maybe mustering up some applause, because you’ve managed to type anything coherent at all with a sensory system that allows you to look at the ‘Friday Night Lights’ style and say, “yep, that’s a pretty real feel to me!!”
The hospital scenes were shaky-ass!
