AI read the news over on Giantbomb.com and did a search for a thread on a FF7 remake, since it is a videogame rumor that started all the way back in the PS2 era, but I couldn’t find a specific thread discussing it.
This is as near to a guaranteed slam dunk as Square Enix could make. Even if you disliked FF7 the nostagia factor is high on this and will more than likely sell better than any installment made in the series in the last ten years.
Personally I really found myself hating the narration in this teaser.

I would be totally on board with a Crono Trigger remake, but most, if not all of the NES/SNES FF games leave me feeling the same meh.
I surprised they didn’t announce a 10 year plan to remake all the final fantasy games. Of course because it square-enix it would take 30 years to complete that 10 year plan, but who cares just take our money square-enix I know damm well I buying it anyway.
Chrono Trigger is perfect as is, doesn’t need any kind of remake.
Same goes for VI.
7 tho is a hot mess of a game. That’s why its always been targeted by the REMAKE cries: its a huge, fantastic, epic thing wrapped up in a kind of gross polygon hell. Renders it nigh unplayable in the modern formats.
So yeah, this’ll be good. Haven’t gotten those kind of chills in many years.

AIt’s not the graphics that are the biggest problem with VII. It’s the rambling, unfocused, and frequently poorly-written story and poorly-developed characters.
ASee I disagree with that. You’re not wrong that FF7 is a blocky mess, where you’d have to squint just see if that thing is a black dude or a dog–but I always thought that was part of its charms. Not that it’s ugly, but that it represents an earlier time in video game history.
But yeah, if they are going to remake this, they really should just make a different game, since I think that’s the only thing you can do.
I played the shit out of the game when I was 12. Absolutely loved it, but even then I could see how incoherent and weird it all was. Not just the super-Japanese stuff like the Honey Bee Inn or cross-dressing to infiltrate Don Corneo’s compound. Half of the Reunion stuff didn’t make sense. Cloud’s resolution to just keep on pretending after all that bullshit in the lifestream is strangely ignored by fans of the game, despite being a massive, deflating cop-out. All the stuff with Red XIII’s “Grandpa”. It’s a wildly inconsistent world and story.
I really don’t get the fundamental, squealing excitement here, speaking as someone who’s played every single Final Fantasy on release in North America since that very first NES game in the summer of 1990, but whatever. I suppose if you were, like, twelve when this game came out in '97, this is probably the most exciting news of your life (going by Twitter right now). For others like me who recognize that far better FF games were developed both before and after FFVII, this news is more, “Um…okay,” yet legitimately interesting in one sense because it means SquareEnix now possess the unheard-of golden opportunity to actually correct many of the original’s glaring shortcomings, and make a properly balanced seventh game this time around.
For that reason alone…I’ll confess to a bit of cautious optimism, here. If they can make the characters actual characters now instead of walking Materia-slots, I’ll buy this on Day One. And honestly, when they showed Midgar in that trailer, my jaw dropped to the floor. For the very first time, the impression was given that Midgar is a huge, living, breathing, dirty city. The atmosphere was perfect.
What does this mean for the FF mod-community, though? How simultaneously thrilled and full of despair those people have to be right now. Creating content because they love the game so much, as they thought this would never actually happen, and now that it is, all those literal years of work will probably never finish now.
Dude’s excited. And people watch that sort of thing on Youtube, I guess. Can’t really fade him for it.
I’d react the same way if Yu Suzuki came out to announce Virtua Fighter 6.
But nah he came out to hit the audience up for some spare change to go make more Shenmue. Whatever, man. Just get back around to the fighting simulator when you get a chance, okay.

I really doubt it. It’s not the same Squaresoft anymore. They don’t do genuinely bizarre shit anymore, they just do pretentious quasi-philosophical pomp and emo-nu-core fashion-designer faggotry.
