E3 2018 (The expected, the unexpected and the impossible)

Anthem looks soooo painfully generic.

Even the jetpack/Iron Man stuff doesn’t even look that fun to play. Coupled with the fact that I’ve seriously soured on this whole “games as a service” thing that’s gonna be a HARD pass for me. First time I’ve ever not gotten a Bioware game right here.

Oh there’s a new Jedi game by Respawn! We’re not gonna show you one second of it though.

Battlefield V is just whatever.

And seeing Command & Conquer reduced to a fucking mobile game makes me unreasonably angry.

FUCK EA. That press conference was particularly shit for a company who’s press conferences are usually shit.

Wow rts has fallen hard. RIP C&C.

Anthem just looks like Mass Effect 2.0 as opposed to the little of Destiny I played. The Mass Effect series were third person shooters with some mobility stuff in a sci-fi setting and open areas to explore. This looks like a mechanically better third person shooter with more mobility options in a sci-fi setting and for the first time BioWare doing open areas that doing look like trash.

The multiplayer just looks like a progression of ideas from the last two Mass Effect games. They’ve been toying with the idea of multiplayer bring integrated into the single player since Mass Effect 3, this just seems to be the next step of that. There’s single player, you can still play by yourself from the sound of it, but you can also team up with other people.

I say the third person shooting looks better than Mass Effect, but at the same time what they showed of it this year doesn’t look as good as what they showed last year.

That EA conference was maybe the worst E3 presentation I’ve ever seen before. EA had nothing to show this year, to the point I don’t even know why they did a show.

EA has had bad shows the last several years, but this year was particularly bad.

The problem with the Destiny model, in regards to a decent narrative, is that the open-world nature sorta runs against that. Because it’s an MMO where every playable character is essentially playing the same story, story has to be vague enough so that every gamer can experience the same power fantasy: You are teh awesome and unique and you alone can save the galaxy…like everyone else.

Can it be done? Maybe? Apparently people really like that Elder Scrolls online stuff. And apparently that Star Wars online game is considered be some of the best Star Wars story in a SW video game. But there’s been too many of these open world games that really shit the bed.

So I’m not expecting much from Anthem aside from being a pretty, shallow husk of a game.

Holy shit, Sekiro: Shadows die Twice looks amazing.
And seems Microsoft learned the lesson from last year and is on a full barrage of games here

Aaaand I guess Ubisoft took that whole bulshit The Division is pro Trump* thinkpieces seriously, judging by the sequels narrative,

*Yes, it was BS; the lore and gameworld made it clear the main bad guys were basically raiders, cultists and mercs operating under thebanner of big bussiness and elitists.

After the Xbox One X launch/pricing details, which didn’t take up much time, last year’s Xbox conference was pretty much all games. There was just a lot more indie stuff and less eastern stuff. Even though Sekifo and Devil May Cry V will sell like 10 copies each on Xbox, it balances the slate a bit more to have AAA stuff from Japan.

Oh shit, Battletoads is coming back!

Battletoads is more a meme than a game series at this point. I wonder how much interest there actually is. Cool, I guess.

Dying Light 2 looked a lot better than I would have expected, and Chris Avellone being involved in the narrative design makes me really interested.

Holy Fuck that surprise Cyberpunk 2077 trailer…Sony better step up with their show.

If Dying Light 2 lives up to Avellone’s involvement and the huge level of free support the first game had, im in.

I expect Sony to stick with what they said, and mostly just focus on long demos for Spider-man, Ghosts of Tushima, Last of Us 2, and Death Stranding. Sprinkle in trailers for Call of Duty and Red Dead (ans maybe Assassin’s Creed) and more info on Dreams, Day Gone, and Destiny 2 expansion, and that is probably the conference. The fact that stuff like Devil May Cry and Sekiro debuted with Xbox tells me that Sony probably isn’t going to have a large number of announcements.

The big exclusive surprises could be Bloodborne 2, a new Killzone or Ridge Racer and maybe a resurgence of Capcom/Konami/SE properties, like Onimusha, Resident Evil, Contra or Valkyrie Profile.
We might see the new Splinter Cell there as well.
The biggest, unconfirmed rumor is Sony revealing something backwards compatibility related.
As for Bethesda tonight, we are getting either that space RPG or a new Elder Scrolls, probably Doom 2 as well, since they have shown a lot of Fallout 76 and are probably keeping a big reveal for their show.

Killzone feels dead to me, with how well Horizon did and how little heat that series ever generated.

The remake of RE2 will probably be at Sony

EA yesterday was an embarrassment, today Microsoft kicked ass, and Bethesda is off to a good start with a lengthy look at Rage 2 and a brief look at Doom 2 (called Doom Eternal).

Hmm. Halo Infinite and Doom Eternal. I see a pattern here…

Bethesda: Bringing Fuck Nazis to every platform.
Loved it.

Yep, Fallout 76 is an online only “games as service” game with survival elements and crafting. It is going to be grief city. No thanks.

Godamn, the level of teasing of Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI.

The Elder Scrolls VI.

Just announced. But why even tease Starfield and TES VI? They’ll be here in 20 years.

Probably because they realized ending on a mobile game was beyond stupid.

At best, Starfield is next year. So what does that make ES VI, 2021-2022? I suppose it was nice to confirm that Bethesda isn’t going to be cranking out online gank fests like Fallout ‘76, but it was a big nothing of a tease.
