Rock legend David Bowie is set to star in the next series of British TV
series Doctor Who, playing an alien. Producers of the BBC show have targeted
the singer because of his “great other-worldly looks” according to reports.
British newspaper The Sun claims the 60-year-old will clash with actor David
Tennant’s Doctor in a two-part episode of the show, which will be aired next
year. A source tells the newspaper, “Bowie said he’d be interested as long
as he’s not subjected to hours of disfiguring make-up.”

I love this show more than i love booze, but I am waaaaay concerned about Catherine Tate. I really didn’t like her in the Runaway Bride and googled around to check out some of her sketch stuff: bleh. I have a default “instant love” setting for red heads but so far everything I have seeen her do shits me up the wall.
It will be nice to do away with the mooning doe eyed lovestruck companion but I’m pretty wary of the Tate factor.
I read that Steve Moffat was a two parter in the fourth season: YES!!! I hope to christ he inherits this show when Davies leaves.
And for fucks sake: lets have a rest from the Daleks. Just one season. That’s all we need.
Could not agree more. I heard somewhere that, as per the terms of the agreement with the Terry Nation estate, Who is contractually obligated to feature the Daleks at least once a season. That’s great and all, but that last two-parter (ARRRGGGGGH) really showed diminishing returns.
As for Tate…I’ve got my fingers crossed. Maybe she’ll be great.
There’s also been rumors about Ben Kingsley and Joan Collins showing up in season 4 (not that that makes it so). Though if Kingsley is indeed playing who rumors say he’s playing, it would make the inevitable Dalek episode of season 4 a lot more interesting. Still, I’m skeptical as hell.
The only rumor to come up so far that seems to have some truth to it is that 5th Doctor Peter Davison will appear in the Who segment for the upcoming Children in Need special. And even then, that’s me taking Sylvester McCoy’s word for it…not that I think he’s lying, of course–he could just be misinformed.
And I wholeheartedly agree that Moffat would be perfect to take over.

She’s not technically canned…she’ll be in a few episodes of Torchwood, and then back for the last few episodes of S4. But as to why they went that route, I’m not sure. She was fine, the only problem I had with her character was the unrequited love angle…which was certainly not Agyeman’s fault. Davies mishandled that.
She was certainly the best-looking companion the Doctor has ever had, but I felt zero chemistry between them, romantic or otherwise. Again, not her fault in any way. This is why they’re supposed to screen test lead actors together before giving the part away.

They actually did screen test her a fair bit if I remember correctly after casting her as a quickly dispatched Torchwood agent in second series. Martha was a great character who buried Rose in the Take Care Of Themselves Department, but having the Doctor still mooning after Rose was a bad idea and it muffled the connection the two performers were able to develop, I think.
The idea of having a companion he comes back to after they have left him is brilliant. It hasn’t been done before outside that one Sarah Jane episode so it’s a new idea. Can’t wait.
You know which episode shows good onscreen (not necessarily romantic) chemistry between those two? Smith & Jones. Watching it again got me all re-frustrated that Davies went the “unrequited love” route with Martha, because it made her a far less interesting character. In that first episode, she has so much potential…

It’s all over the place that season four is gonna be followed by a gap in the show, with only three specials being taped for 2009. And the way it’s being talked about, I’d lay money on those specials being based around Tennant’s swansong from the role.
I just can’t get my head around why the BBC would want to stymie what has been a fairly remarkable cash cow for them. Aside from a few ratings wobbles here and there Doctor Who has been fairly dominant in the UK and the merchandising side is doing exceptionally well.
I know they’re cutting back money on ALL dramas due to budgetary restraints but it seems like odd business to try and get rid of one of their key assets.
Has anyone else heard that Billie Piper is returning in S4? It was said pretty matter-of-factly on TV Squad today, but it was the first I’d heard of it. I know that it’s not a popular sentiment in the fan community, but I’m a fan of that particular character.

They’re not canning it - season five is 100% confirmed for 2010. This might be a way of appeasing RTD before he exits stage left. He’s writing the three specials before riding off into the sunset.
It still seems odd to have a one year gap just to facilitate a new show runner. Although if they used the regular funding of a series to produce three massive on shot episodes it could be pretty spectacular.
