Galactica is really manned by a bunch of complete goons, it seems. I like that.
I am four episodes into the series now - I hope this bullshit with the Cylons pranking Helo has a point.

Agreed. There are some episodes coming up for you that look as if much of them were filmed in downtown Cleveland or Boise or something, with regular present-day architecture and alleys that have plain old trash cans and dumpsters in them…

Reminds me of Picard driving a jeep in STAR TREK: NEMESIS. Just an excuse to have a car chase scene. What a bunch of crap.
Makes sense to me, actually, for a few reasons:

The level of technology on Caprica et al is, besides a few very distinctive differences, roughly analagous to Earth Tech. If Earth is another colony of Kobol, or whatever, it seems okay enough to me to think that the twelve other colonies, due to their proximity, were more able to maintain certain elements of their original expertise (space travel, etc.) but are generally much like we are. Looking at Kobol, they’ve certainly lost enough of their original tech to make Kobol’s seem almost mystical in comparison.

It’s a syndicated cable show. At least, I assume it’s syndicated…It’s not Blade Runner, for pete’s sake. The production values are extremely high for a cable show and I’m not really expecting the guys to reinvent every aspect of an alien civilization with a “well, on this world…the wheel is octagonal…let’s begin there” sort of mentality.
But then, I’m not as prone to cultivating a pretense of general dissatisfaction as some of you miserable fist fucking fanboys seem to be. Geesh.

Actually to me, it’s the general high quality of everything else in the series that makes the low-tech contemporary stuff stand out even that much more. The show, for the most part, eschews the typical “Look, it’s the future! Everyone drinks blue or green drinks out of oddly-shaped glasses!” stuff. But on a planet where large orbital dropships can disgorge flyers capable of atmospheric flight AND space travel, you’d think there would be fewer brick buildings and telephone poles.
No one is saying it kills the show completely, it’s just disconcerting, is all. Lighten up.
The tech-level doesn’t bother me – aside from the battlestars and Vipers, they’re not too far ahead of us, and who knows where we’d be with space technology had we not all but stopped manned spaceflight after the moon missions? It seems more convincing that we could have sprung from these people if their tech level is approximate to ours.
But honestly, it’s not something that pulls me ouf of the show one bit while I’m watching it. The show is more about the people than the gadgets.

Nop car chase here. Just a very recognizable earth made auto. And I agree with Jacob (& also Richard.) Its only very occasionally that the reliance on modern man-made objects/culture bother me. Usually, its not an issue (not much time spent in Caprica) or it works because the parallels are deliberate.

Yeah, I know. It’s disconcerting that the cast and crew are unable to do live photography on location on an alien planet or just green screen everything cause, you know, that added so much depth to the prequels and all.
I guess I’m just rebelling against the whole “Devin Faraci, media personality, turns his withering gaze on Battlestar Galactica” concept. It’s a show I like, sure. I’m not so much into lost, but I’m not creating threads about them as if my opinion matters. Some folks dig it and find it an enjoyable escape from whatever it is that they like to escape from and thats good enough for me.

OK, I am up to the last episode of season 1. The hardcore aspect amazingly stayed. Couldn’t believe that. And the political stuff is generally awesome.
I really dislike the Baltar stuff. It’s annoying. It’s stupid.
I am just about done with the “manipulative Cylons” bit, as well. They really are going out of their way to help these Galactica people left and right. It best be that the Cylons want the Galactica people to lead them to Earth, but even that’s not the best reasoning for all this cat and mouse bullshit.
I liked the on-story episodes. The ones that were less on-story, like Starbuck and the trainees, left me cold.
This is more or less a very great tv show, and it seems i found it right as scifi started repeating season 2!

Reruns are supposed run until January. Good timing indeed. My wife and I were talking about the V similarity the other day.
