Dead Rising - Zombies, Zombies and More Zombies

I generally hate zombie games - for me, they are just lame.

the Dead Rising demo had me smiling the whole time - I love all of the items that you can pick up - that is where the fun is to be had with this one.

The demo had me wanting more - perfect. This will be my third purchase for the 360

you know you’re in for an interesting time when, as soon as you load the demo, there’s a disclaimer (in 9 languages) stating that the game is not related to “george a. romero’s ‘dawn of the dead’”.

the only way i’d like this game any more would be if there was multiplayer over live. its complete fucking anarchy. i’m playing the demo more than i’m playing that piece of shit “chromehounds”, also known as “our robots are made of molasses!”

personal favorite moments- taking a shopping cart from one end of the area to the other clearing out shittons of zombies; mixing up some ‘spitfire’ in the blender in the coffeeshop and spitting zombies to death; going at a crowd with a katana, and splattering cooking oil in front of “jill’s sandwiches” and just watching the zombies slip and fall while throwing pies at them.

You know what makes the pies and oil combination better? The Benny Hill theme song. I loaded up that and Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” and went to town on the undead masses. It was joy.

Intestine ripping should be fun.

I’m pretty stoked. Got my pre-order paid and I’m sportin the uniform..

That’s awesome!

Not convinced. Is there actually a game in here? More like a nice interactive screensaver so far. Nothing I’ve played @ E3 or otherwise dispels that notion.

And why can’t I load oil into the squirt gun and turn it into an improvised flamethrower?

Yeah, don’t judge a game by the amount of silly stuff you can do. Games like this rely on shallow “Woot! Zombies! And I’m killing them in wacky ways!” responses.

Once you’ve grown tired of doing that over and over again, what have you got to justify the purchase?

EDIT: Pre-emptive response to the people planning to reply with “I’ll never get tired of killing zombies with household items!” - YOU ARE BORING.

I’ll get tired of it. Yes, I will. But, I’ll get tired of every video game, eventually. $60 is not alot to spend for a solid 3 weeks of fun if you factor in how much anything else on earth costs. $25 for the girlie and I to see a 2 hour movie. $60 for a tank of gas. $5 a day for a lunch-time Taco Bell fixation. Besides, the game is fun. Its going to be fun and I think that is worth a purchase. In the throngs of games that look identical to other games this is something “relatively” fresh.

And talking about shallow games. Look at Halo’s I can walk around and shoot people and people in flying purple things…and we all know how fun that game is. Repetition doesn’t have to kill something if its a fun enough repetition. The verdict is still out on Dead Rising, though, as I can see this one getting boring quicker than others. But worth the price of admission it, most definitely, is.

A solid three weeks of fun? I doubt Dead Rising has five hours of gameplay in it, let alone 500+.

What will make or break the game is how good the side missions and objectives are. If they can keep the game flowing and provide enough of a purpose than it might hold off the boredom of random zombie killing. But whenever I get tired of the game I’ll just ebay it like I do with all games and make back about $35-40, so it will still be worth it.

I meant 3 weeks calendar time. Not 3 weeks hour-wise. There is a very good chance that someone can enjoy this game from 8-8-06 till 8-29-06, when Saint’s Row comes out. It’ll be more like 30-45 hours of play time, which is more reasonable since I barely play Burnout Revenge and have around 90 logged into that.

The Demo has not convinced me to buy this. It’s kind of fun, but I could not justify making this a purchase unless I got it for like $25. I’ll play the demo some more though.

30-45 hours?

That’s about half of Oblivion.

I’d be surprised if the game doesn’t have prizes for completing it in a few hours from the look of the demo. It’s either going to be incredibly short, or incredibly dull.

The game is 6 hours long. 3 days in-game time. Then the game ends. There are ‘supposedly’ 18 different endings. I’m not going to play through the game 18 times, but I’ve played the demo over and over enough to know that I will enjoy this game and play through it at least a couple times. bye

Is he coming back?

A friend of mine is already set on using his Best Buy bucks and a coupon to get this game. I’m interested in seeing how fun it is, but I don’t see the gameplay lasting a number of weeks of consistent play.

Unless you stagger your trips to the cinema in ten minute chunks, the whole “going to a movie vs buying this game” comparison is rather pointless then.

Burnout Revenge is a racing game. Of course you can keep playing that. And I’ll eat my own scrotum if Dead Rising offers 30-45 hours of play time - forcing people to play the same sections over and over isn’t value for money, it’s padding.

State of Emergency. Destroy All Humans. Stubbs the Zombie. Have we learned nothing from these games? Giving you wacky shit to do is pointless if all you have to do is wacky shit.

If the game actually is 6 hours long, as Brittlebones stated, that is $10 per hour of gameplay.

You could buy Dawn of the Dead and get 2 hours of entertainment for that.

Thanks to Slater and Dan for the heads-up on this game. I thought this might a 360 killer-app but apparently Oblivion remains the system only true original greatness (original: not downloaded from Live).

You just had to go and slam Stubbs, didn’t ya? I actually bought that on release day and while the gameplay was incredibly shallow, I must still say I never tired of raising up a zombie army. And it was nice to see a funny game. I don’t regret the purchase.

As to Dead Rising, I really dislike the demo. You get hints in it that there are all these story objectives you need to accomplish, but then all they let you experience is mindless killing. It reminds me a lot of my issues with GTA. I would read nothing but positive reviews about the sandbox approach their games have, and yet I found once the storyline was completed my interest would die. I can only drive around evading cops and running over pedestrians pointlessly for so long before I get sick of it. And the same applies to zombie killing. So it all comes down to Dead Rising’s storyline to me. I don’t expect greatness from the plot, just something to give the zombie slaughter meaning.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the timed events you need to catch during play in order to reveal “The Truth”. It could be a lot of fun…but I can’t quite shake the sense it could turn into Night Trap if done poorly.

Is this a big blockbuster for the 360? I don’t think so. I think it will be fun and then it will be gone. But most games are like that.
