Yadda yadda, M&M, yadda…yadda, ok, whatever…press release verbage…yaddda…wait…
“Powered by an enhanced version of the award-winning Source Engine created by Valve to power its Half-Life 2 video game, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic will allow players to immerse themselves in an environment that responds and envelops them like never before, thanks to the Source Engine’s exceptional technological enhancements in areas such as character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics and shader-based rendering.”
Ok, now I’m interested. I was never a fan of Might & Magic before, but if they’re doing a 1st person adventure with the Valve engine…yeow.
I think Might and Magic saw what they were doing and wanted to be in there first so they went with an existing engine and will probably be out first and saying they were the guys that did a “FPS Fantasy game”.
Underworld by Origin was the first fantasy 3D FPS, iirc. There have been plenty of others, like Lands of Lore, Wizardry 8, the Elder Scrolls series (including Morrowind), and others.
That said, this Dark Messiah looks pretty damned neat so far…
The most “FPS” of all the previously released first person fantasy games was the Wheel of Time game, which was much more a shooter than any of the other games listed. It was actually pretty good, too, with a fun single player, and a pretty interesting multiplayer component.
It’s a very short demo and the level is the same as in the numerous gameplay videos they’ve released. It’d be kinda cool if this level really wasn’t in the full game, but just something they made to demonstrate the game. That would mean that they haven’t released any spoilerific material from the full game.
I like the gameplay especially the way the movement feels like your body has weight and you aren’t just floating around.
so, did anyone else - after playing the demo - get the niggling feeling that the physics based interactions in Oblivion were tacked on instead of being developed as part of the core gameplay experience? Not a knock against Oblivion, but I don’t recall there being any cool moments when interacting with the traps in the various dungeons compared to what they did with this demo. Some cool stuff on display, look forward to it’s release.
I saw some interesting physics in DMoM&M: I froze a goblin, and when I kicked him over his arms shattered when he hit the ground, but his body stayed intact.
One kind of subtle thing I noticed was when you turn to look in another direction, it takes a second or two for your hands to come around to the same position you’re looking in.
My CPU has issues with Source physics–it hitches and I can practically hear it muttering “carry the two…”–so I don’t think I can enjoy this in the intended way. A shame, I really liked the feel of it.
