I had a ton of fun. It’s been a great stress release for me with all that’s happened the last two weeks. I thank the Halo Gods some call “Bungie”.
Just so I get this straight, if I want to talk to folks while in a game, I have to press the white button first, correct? And if we’re in a team game, only my team members can hear me? I’ve probably said a bunch of stuff to people and they’ve never heard it because I didn’t press the button. So, to anyone who can clear that up for me I say thank you.
If you talk normally, you’ll be heard by any player within your immediate vicinity (about 10-15 feet "in game"

Press the white button once and you’ll hear a click. Whatever you say will be broadcast to all your teammates. Enemies nearby will still be able to hear you, though. You don’t need to press the white button again to close the channel; that happens automatically.
Dumb question: If the white button is now team chat, then what does your flashlight or stealth camo? Or are those disabled for multi? I literally have no clue.

If your teammates are close by, they can hear you. You don’t have to press the white button. The white button is for all team chat regardless of where they are on the map. Also, be sure to note that while you are talking a nearby enemy can hear your chatter.

Stealth camo is a pick up item on multi.

Yeah, that was a pretty damn good night of action. I can’t believe I played for 6 straight hours. Lots of fun.
As far as the headset goes, the guy at Gamestop told me that if you don’t already have a headset reciever than you have to get the $30 microsoft one, so that’s what I got. He could have been lying to me though. It seems like a pretty good investment if you plan on playing a lot of XBL.
I have a question too. When you are playing without teams (FFA) does the white button do anything? I thought maybe it let you talk to everyone, but I’m not sure. If someone could tell me I’d appreciate it.
I’ll probably be back on tomorrow, but not until after midnight when I get off work.
Get the microsoft Communicator. It comes with the most important part- the “brick” that plugs into your controller. You can buy off-brand bricks (I think) but they aren’t worth it. The Microsoft product does it’s job damn well.
The other half of the package is the headset- the part with the microphone and headphone (aka as "the skull clamp". That’s cheap shit, prone to breakage. When people talk about breaking their Live headsets and buying a new one, that’s the part their referring to. You can buy some pretty nice ones from Plantronics and other companies, but keep in mind… they don’t work without the brick.
Goddammit. Oh well, might as well pony up the $30 (I have a two-month free Live trial going, so I don’t really need to buy a starter kit).
It’s like $30 bucks for just the headset or $35 with three months of subscription and some demos. I think EB even had the the starter kit with three months, the headset, and Crimson Skies for $40.

nothing beats that moment someone told that kid the news that puberty was turned off…from wednesday afternoon’s game. think it was nick, but can’t be 100% sure…

You can add that subscription from your starter kit onto a two-month free trial (just can’t add on another two-month free trial).
Also since the MS one comes with a headset (and as someone else mentioned you have to have the piece that plugs into the controller) you might as well start with the MS headset that comes with it. Then once it breaks or aggravates you (man that thing just doesn’t fit right, I guess that is what happens when you have a large head..) you can go out and get one of Plantronics nice new headsets…)
