That’s the thing. They have a formula, but they don’t move from it. It’s highlighted in this episode specifically because Chuck tries to move on with his life, but the end just resets everything.
It’s also why Reaper got dull for so long until they switched up the formula a little.

If there was any reason to bother with HD…a brief snippet from tonights episode should sell some tv’s even in this fundamentally strong economy.

I record CHUCK and TERMINATOR, but I watched CHUCK first. It amuses me greatly, and Yvonne is painfully beautiful (I have an HDTV but NBC isn’t in HD here - no fair!).
It was rather annoying for them to spend so much time on Chuck moving on, when as an audience, we know they’re never going to ditch the Buy More and the cast of characters they’ve invested in there. It’s wasted time, and quite a bit of a downer as well, since they basically presented it as his worst nightmare.
It was cool to see Chuck’s competance level rising though. I think I read that he’ll be seeking spy training this season to become slightly less pathetic, which would be great, both for comedic value and credible realism. It always annoyed me that on a show like BUFFY, her friends got attacked by vampires/monsters every few days, yet never even took a basic self-defense course. I don’t care if you’ve created a fantasy world, the people in it should still react to it somewhat realistically.
Hopefully, CHUCK will spend a bit more time this season on storylines that have the slightest chance of going somewhere. I don’t mind that the show’s not going to diverge wildly from its (quite enjoyable) formula, as long as -something- happens, and they don’t insult me by pretending they might “shake everything up!”
The show is becoming interminable. The Buy More concept got old 2/3rds of the way through the first scene. Chuck as the utterly incompetent schmuck about halfway through.
Give an episode that’s nothing but a montage of Chuck training for a year or two, or this is going to quickly become unwatchable. Figure out where you’re going with the character, and get moving.
I’d like to think this episode was just about reintroducing the character and this universe to everyone who’s just jumping onboard. Redundant, but way too entertaining to hate.
I do agree, something need to actually happen here, pronto.
Chappers, I like the show…Chuck is now my favorite series, even topping…The Unit. Michael Clark Duncan was great as the enemy spy, and I love how Chuck aka Charles Carmichael was able to save the day in the end with his team. Just one question though? was that Morgan and co with fake guns or was that an actual S.W.A.T. team?
Liked the episode. However I am getting a bit tired of the buy more crew and the sulking over Sara.
MCD was pretty good as the bad guy. THe Charles Carmichael part was great. And I have to say, the actress playing Chuck’s Sister is so freaking hot it’s not funny.
Gift Shop Girl is nice but she’s no Strahotski.
I thought the premiere was a lot of fun. The creators said it was going to be a second premiere so I was okay with it mostly being a retread of the first season. I also really like that Chuck and Sarah basically told each other how they felt. Hopefully, now that Intersect 2.0 needs to be completely rebuilt and Chuck is back in the game, they’ll keep the will they/won’t they nonsense to a minimum.
And I don’t see Chuck as the utterly incompetent schmuck anymore. He was quite able throughout the whole premiere. And, hell, Casey even said he wasn’t doing too bad for an untrained novice. And speaking of Casey, it was great to see more of the gadgets and modifications he’s made to his apartment.
It was like a second first episode. Except with less Tony Todd.

Stick with Knightrider, Chuck is obviously too smart for you
Dr. Murder, Thank You for your opinion…however, I will continue watching Chuck, The Unit, Knight Rider, as well as the upcoming Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

ok, i think chuck may well be my favorite show right now. and to give credit where credit is due, a good percentage of the reason why i checked it out on dvd was chappers continued craving for it back in the writer’s strike thread. you kept it in the forefront of my brain so thanks.
but to disagree a bit here…
…i love the formulaic aspect of the show. i feel the whole point of it is to reapproach the action shows of the eighties with the lessons we’ve learned in this post-24 overarching narrative era of television shows. there is an attempt to balance forward momentum from episode to episode while still maintaining a certain amount of status quo within each episode that i find interesting. and i still love the buy more crew as well.
I would like to see Chuck actually become a spy working with Sarah, with Charles Carmichael as his actual cover. John Larraquette was terrific as the suave James Bondesque agent. I especially enjoyed seeing Chuck ask the CIA to set up his sisters house with all her favorite things as a favor, since he helped retrieve the CIA’s missing tech. i feel that’s where they’re heading this season. if the first season had been a full season, we’d only be at the mid season point and having “carmichael” start to feel more confident and competent would fit the mid season beat perfectly. and the season would have ended with chuck as a spy.
how this may or may not have been reorganized due to the strike is what we’ll find out this season.

Hopefully Larraquette will become the new CIA liason to replace Tony Todd. He needs to be on the show more. Check that, any show more (Except Boston Legal.. he sucked on that to the point I stopped watching)
Loved the whole Buy More scenes, Loved the morgan advice and I loved the Sarah slow motion shots. I hope they’re not making him into a spy.. I think that would take a bit from the show. I’m all for him having spy moments but him being geeky and over his head really works at least for another season.
in a related note, i finally watched “The Queen” the other day. i liked it. but i spent the whole film wishing they’d cut to a reaction shot from Christine Sullivan. for ten years now i’ve wondered how she took princess di’s death…
