The preview for next week was better than this episode. The initiative mention, and the implication that the chip is based off of old Nazi research, were nice touches though.
Good filler, although I’m surprised that’s what the show seems to be going with during sweeps month. Still, next week’s episode looks like the bestest thing ever.
Oh, and there better be a nod to Cordy and soon.

Wait a minute. We Canadians don’t get the previews. “Puppet Angel”?!? WTF? Are they all puppets, or just Angel?
BTW, Devin, I believe the show that was talking about being supermarionation (or was it claymation?) was Seinfeld. They wanted to do something really weird without preparing people, but they ended up doing the backwards episode instead. Unless the Angel and Seinfeld writers think alike.
They just showed puppet angel. He looked like a human Muppet or like a Crank Yanker’s puppet. There were a few shots of a Muppet-type kids show and an overdubbed line by Angel saying something like “The show is possessed” (or evil, something like that).
Angel-Puppet looked funny as hell. I was laughing like crazy.
I got a question, at the end Angel said “you were the only vampire I sired when i had my soul” Dawson asked if he had a soul. Angel said I don’t think it works that way. And then Dawson said “You gave me just enough soul”. Did he mean that literally? I mean it sounded sort of like a metaphor but I always thought when vampires became vamps they really liked it. I mean look at Spike! Spike loved being a vampire and embraced it, now of course he acted oddly unvamp-like but that was only after he became infatuated with Buffy and and after the chip was installed. All vampires act sort of the same(I mean some are stronger, some are smarter, but they are all more or less evil blood drinkers). So do you think when a souled vampire bites someone they transmit some soul sorta? I mean Dawson wanted revenge for becoming a vamp! And blood lust and killing, even feeding didn’t do much for him. You mean his number one food source wouldn’t make him happy? Of course if this is true than what about the vamps Spike made in Sunnydale? Of course the one Buffy talked to was different and you didn’t see the other vamps long enough to know how human they were. Dawson chose death to end what he was…so what do you think?
I think different vampires feel about their vampire ways in their own way.
Angel lived it purely for the evil of it.
Spike lived it purely for the thrill of it.
Either Dawson had some sort of conscious. Or he just never found what made him happy.
Remember, being a vampire is a hollow existence.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I also think that the episode should have dealt much more with that as the ‘A’ story. The idea that being bitten by an ensouled vampire creates a being that is caught between being a man and a monster is far more interesting than the small amount of screen time it received.
Oh, and Prankster, the previews basically show Angel getting magically turned into a puppet and then having to deal with Spike chortling and saying “You’re a bloody puppet!”
Cut to Puppet Angel launching himself at Spike and attempting to wrestle him to the floor, with Spike laughing all the while and saying “oooh, a wee little puppet.” It was drop dead hysterical stuff.

I agree. It seems like they are all different. Dawson just never found anything to live for.
Very nice episode. Very interesting take on Dawson’s vamp life. Never thought a vampire could feel empty with his life. Its weird because in a way the vampire myhtos was “humanized” in asense in this episode. Dawson’s character was a very nice spin on what we have come to believe vampire’s are.
On the whole, great episode. Its beginning to be a pattern again! This show has really hit its stride now.
Gunn losing his head? Maybe the powers that be are cutting lose the angel crew…should be interesting.
Puppet Angel looks like Guy Smiley. This can only be a good thing.

But the meat of it was at the end…I think over time Whedon has shown vampires evolve from Buffy’s punching bag to complex unhuman beings, even the ones without souls, and thats made the shows much more intresting.
I would like to think that Gunn losing his lawyer skills.. will make him the second to come to his senses. With Angel regaining his will for the fight being the first.
Then Wesley will come around and finally Fred.
I think the idea of Gunn being evil is just to lead you one direction and then set us up for a waaay different surprise. (or I hope)

Don’t you think this will make Gunn worried that he’d be worthless at W&H? Without his brain he’s just muscle. We know he won’t tell anyone about if because in the Buffyverse people never tell anyone untill after the bad happens.
See, I just got done discussing the Gunn thing with someone at work. She interpreted it the same as you guys…he was starting to say something about a protocol, then forgot it mid-sentence, ie. his lawyer download is fucking up. I saw it as he started saying something about a protocol, then mid-sentence decided he was revealing too much, and wanted to keep the cards to his chest, ie. GUNN IS EEEEEEVIL!!!
The “just enough soul” thing is also very interesting. Chances are the sailor is mistaken on that point, or else speaking metaphorically, but maybe there is something to that. He certainly seemed more troubled than any pure vamp we’ve seen.

Seriously, that’s how I saw it too… was starting to wonder if I had gone nuts.
I dont know…I still think gunn being evil is a big possibility, but things are going wonky at w&h. The white room is empty, and they cant get in touch with the senior partners…there seems to be something big coming.
