J. August was FUCKING ON tonight in his scene with Harmony towards the end of the episode. The only thing I see happening is Gunn sacrificing his life for the group that he truly fit in with.
Yeah, Angel’s getting the kickass sendoff that Buffy was (mostly) denied.
I really hope Angel gets picked up. We need another season. Though, actually, I’m fairly cool with the idea of Buffy-Angel TV movies to wrap up the story(ies).
I didn’t like Harmony comforting Gunn-it’s not in her character.
And J. August was the man tonite(So was Wes but we knew that). I wonder if he’ll get the law stuff out now.
Wes needs some good news. I always sorta preferred nerdy dork Wes to dark ‘n’ angsty Wes, but nevertheless they’ve banged him around enough for the last three years. He needs a happy ending.
Very nice episode. Makes me sad that it hasn’t been picked up…
Anyone know the name of the song that played in the end, it was very damn good.
In the next episode Wes will shoot some children who look at him funny and then beat a nun. He will also scowl.
This season seems to be unable to do wrong. The show has reached a level of pathos that I honestly believe is only matched by Season Two of Buffy. The last shot of Fred driving off was just heartbreaking. I wonder if Acker really is going to leave the show or if she’ll continue on as Ilyria. I don’t see Fred coming back.
This show must be saved. It’s too good to just disappear like this.

Who knew Acker could pull off that kind of body language? Who knew she’d pull off anime girl with attitude and sexyness? I like her alot, and I had no clue.
The shot of her leaving Wolfram & Hart, head cocked, wind in her hair as Angel fell was beautiful.

Forget last week’s Whedon episode – Steven DeKnight’s one-two punch as a writer/director on “Shells” blew it out of the water. Superb ep, all the way around; indeed, this is the best serious ep of the season.
I LOVE the fact that Illyria, rather than being a pat villain, is painted as a three-dimensional character who feels her own sense of utter self-loss.
Marvelous stuff.

I understand that, but this episode was probably written before WB announced that they wouldn’t be renewing the show. Acker must have had some idea that there was the possibility that her character may be written out while the others went on.

Highlight the MARVELous…once again Joss is retreading on the Dark Phoenix saga which he seems to be obsessed with. He did it with Willow, and it looks like he is giong to do his own saga in the swan song of Angel.
Now dont get me wrong…I LOVE what they are doing with Ilyria/Fred, but once the temple was shown destroyed (which I was glad to see, I wasnt looking forward to watching another “stop the army from rising” plot), I had a feeling that Ilyria is giong to be intrigued by human emotion and human life in general. They were hinting at it the whole episode, I am glad they are doing it, even if it is not that original.
I loved the call to Giles. Looks like if we are lucky enough to get another season (fingers crossed), i would think that it would have to resolve the growing strife between the scoobies and angel’s crew.
Amy Acker looks pretty damn hot in that makeup too.
Also, i like the fact that angel outright mentioned that the same thing happened to cordy and he doesnt want it to happen again, because they are totally similar situations.
Wasn’t there suppose to be a storyline on Buffy with Tara and her coming back somehow but it was scraped because Amber Benson didn’t want to do it. Can’t remember how it went but maybe they will do it w/ Fred. I mean nothing is truely destroyed in the Universe.

I think Fox had a problem with Benson’s contract and decided not to renew it, or at least that’s one version I’ve heard.
As for Fred coming back, I think Illyria is here to stay in the Buffy/Angel-verse. I’m sure there was probably something being saved for Season 6 to solve it but since there’s no chance of that happening now, looks like Fred is gone…forever.
Tough choice too. I also liked how they fleshed Illyria’s character out. It’s just unfortunant (sp?) that Fred not only loses her body, but her sould gets destroyed in the process. Ouch.
Now–wasn’t Fred supposed to be merely a temporary vessel for Illyria? Wasn’t she supposed to jump into that giant-ass statue that turned out to be smashed? Doesn’t that mean that inhabiting Fred’s body may be unnatural for her? And doesn’t THAT mean she might slowly start to take on Fred’s attributes? I mean, it sounds like she’s very slowly recovering Fred’s memories (for a moment she didn’t know who Fred was, then she remembered…then by the end of the ep she had a bunch of Fred’s memories.)
I gotta say, though: I’m not crazy about this idea that’s been batted around the Buffyverse that souls can be destroyed through no fault of the owner. I mean, if you’re going to introduce “souls”, isn’t the whole point supposed to be that they’re immortal and whatnot? Seems pretty harsh to do that to Fred, I mean at least all the other Buffyverse characters who have died have (presumably) gotten to go to heaven or whatever.
I am pretty sure there was some sort of idea behind the “soul getting destroyed idea”, that may not come to true fruition with cancellation…although I dont want to go and blame everything on the cancellation…maybe these last 6-7 eps will actually give us a better answer.
I really hope that ilyria plays an important role in the end of this show, because it seems like a very awkward time to add a new character.
Well, you gotta keep in mind, they didn’t know they were cancelled by the WB yet. So this seems like it was a thought-out thing instead of it being rushed, which is what they have to do for the last 6 episodes or something.
There’s no doubts plans will be changing.
Well… that was certainly not how I expected the situation to get resolved. Which is why I love this show.
And while the whole cast was solid, Acker was on point. After years of playing the gawky scientist, she was more than believable as the Old One personified. Sexy, too.
well the visual comparisons to “ghost in the shell” were there.
The references to SHELLS oh 6 or 7 times in the episode kinda gives you an idea of the storyline for Illyria doesnt it?
and J August continues to put on one hell of a performance.
