All-time greatest televison show

Sienfeld, followed closely by the Simpsons.

Tales From The Crypt.

This conversation is over.

The Simpsons in front of 'feld, my man.

Seriously though, in my opinion (many will disagree), the runner up to the Simpsons is another FOX great, Married… with Children.

Really.

You have drained me by speaking.

Buffy will be the show that I’ll keep watching till I die. Simpsons comes in second and probably Live with Regis coming in third. Monty Python’s Flying Circus is still very much fun as is All in the Familly.

Where’s the creep that turned me into a spider-eating man-bitch?

Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt, X-Files, Cheers.

Can I name a bunch?

Simpsons
Seinfield
Star Trek - the original of course
Twilight Zone
MacGyver
A-Team
Thunder Cats
GI Joe
Transformers
He-Man
Kids in the Hall
The Daily Show
MST3K - Why is this not on here yet?
Oh and what the heck, I’ll throw The Next Generation on here too.

Often, people put taglines down here. WHY?

Star Trek
M*A*S*H
Cheers

Of course there are a multitude of shows which have been memorable. But these three have been for me landmark television.

The Simpsons and Seinfeld made me laugh the hardest, while Buffy (and Angel) and the Sopranos continue to bake my noodle, but in terms of ALL TIME greats, there never has been, and I doubt there ever again will be, a show as completely mind-blowing as the Prisoner. 17 episodes – each of which could easily stand alone as among the greatest FILMS ever made.

And fortuitous timing on this thread, as the first two sets of Prisoner DVDs – containing seven episodes – will be released on Halloween. I’ve had them pre-ordered from Amazon for about two months now, and I can barely withstand the anticipation for when they finally get here.

The Simpsons by a mile.

Then in desending order…

Red Dwarf
Happy Days
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
First Season Buck Rogers
Voyagers

The best?

Mystery Science Theater 3000.

End of story.

Not hardly as MTS3K was totally dependant on the lack of quality of the movies they ripped on.

And if you think about it, a lot of the wrap around segments sucked…

How could i forget Kids in the Hall. Almost every bit was funny, and very often hilarious, the movie left something to be desired but it was better than most SNL movies.

Well, I say the Simpsons. It the only show that has kept me interested in almost *literally* half my life

Then after that I would have to say ER, but thats because I used to work in a hospital, so Im partial to that

Sorry Django, but I loved the wrap around segments.

law and order
sportsnight
the simpsons
teletub… oh, wait.

/willko.

Shelby: I agree with you 50%

The Simpsons is the most worthwhile show in existence.

BUT, as we all know, you have no job.

GL, I think you are obsessed with the fact that I dont have a job. Once upon a time I used to, and my fav job was in a Hospital, hence my love for ER

With Breaking Bad ending, I was wondering if a thread about the best shows ever had been posted, and I found this gem of a thread. Ah, 2000 . . . a simpler time.

As much as I love Breaking Bad, I can’t put it ahead of The Sopranos or The Wire, just because the latter stories (Wire, especially) are so much more vast. BB’s triumph is in its laser focus, which is very different from my other favorite shows. Ranking my favs from the recent Golden Age, I’ll go with:

  1. The Sopranos

  2. The Wire

  3. Breaking Bad

  4. Deadwood

  5. Mad Men

Overall, my favorite may still be the early Simpsons. Anything that molds your vocabulary and world outlook has to count for something, right? Comedy-wise, it’s some combination of early Simpsons, Seinfeld and Arrested Development.

I can’t judge BB yet as it hasn’t ended. Once the credits roll on the finale, then I can post where it will be on my list (probably #1). I can’t judge MAD MEN yet for the same reason.

So, excluding BB, my favorites would be:

  1. THE WIRE

  2. THE PRISONER

  3. THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW

  4. CHEERS

  5. MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS

  6. THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW

  7. THE HONEYMOONERS

  8. CARNIVALE

  9. TAXI

  10. 24 (my guilty pleasure)

I think in the case of both Mad Men and BB, it would take a lot of missteps in the final seasons for them to fall or rise on my list. I’m not crazy about the newspaper storyline of S5 of The Wire, but it’s not enough to bring down the rest of the show, at least for me.
