Initial thoughts:

In the absence of GAME OF THRONES, Westworld, Stranger Things, and Handmaid’s Tale cleaned up. I’m kind of dying at the fact that they nominated Shannon Purser, aka Barb, as best guest actress in a drama.

Big Little Lies, which is one of the best things I saw this year, getting nominated for all four of its leads plus Alex Skarsgaard makes me very happy.

Who in the living fuck keeps voting for Modern Family? It’s not fit to carry water for the other comedy nominees.

Glad to see Jessica Lange get a nom for FEUD. That was the best acting that I’ve seen all year, period.

I don’t fully understand the reasoning as to how they managed to slip San Junipero in under “outstanding television movie.”

But fuck it, it’s San Junipero.

Glad to see Tucci and Molina nominated as well.

I thought Michael McKean was pretty damn great on Better Call Saul. Too bad he wasn’t even nominated. (But Banks was!)

Tucci yelling ‘CUNT!!!’ should get him an award. Man was he good in FEUD.

Stranger Things was okay. But fuck me that it was nominated for so much when The Leftovers was almost completely shut out (only one nomination for Ann Dowd for the one episode she appeared in). Fuck all that. Barb? Really?

Edit to correct “shit out” to “shut out”.

Netflix clearly put their weight behind ST (which I thought was just great) this year as opposed to House of Cards and some of their other long-running shows, and HBO was clearly pushing for Westworld, as they have a lot invested in it. I understand the pain of Leftovers not getting nominated (I remember the first few years of the Americans when it seemed like that show couldn’t catch a break), though.

As well as Mamacita!

I know only 8 people watch it, but Tcheky Karyo should at least get some sort of wood base plaque for The Missing.

Boo on no Stuhlbarg or Winstead for Fargo. And no nom for the “Fish Out of Water” BoJack episode in Best Animated is beyond baffling.

But HELL YEAH to David Thewlis, Kristen Schaal for BoJack, and Carrie Fisher pulling a posthumous nom for Catastrophe.

The fact that Baldwin is nominated not as guest actor, but as best supporting actor in a comedy, stinks of bullshit to me.

I like that Animation is getting its own categories now, but what the everloving fuck - Kevin Kline is the nominee from Bob’s Burgers? I mean, he’s great as Fischoeder, but Benjamin, Schaal, even Dan Mintz…

Oh well. I hope “Bob, Actually” can snake the episode category away from “Member Berries”. (it won’t)

I have deep reservations about Sense8’s storytelling competency, but I hope it wins for cinematography. Though The Crown’s fog episode wouldn’t be bad (and I still haven’t started Handmaid’s Tale).

Big day for Donald Glover - nominations in Directing, Writing, and Acting for Atlanta, plus the Comedy Series nom.

If Atlanta doesn’t win for Directing For A Comedy series, it’s a goddamn crime.

Same for Better Call Saul’s “Witness” in the Drama category. Editing too, probably.

Also multi-nommed: Ann Dowd, Riz Ahmed (HELL YES), Ewan McGregor and, uh, Liev Schreiber (for Ray Donovan, which apparently still exists, and two nominations for Outstanding Narration?!).

That episode of the Crown is fantastic, but the cinematography for Handmaid’s Tale blew my socks off.

I also forgot OJ Made in America fell outside last year’s eligibility period.

Is Main Title Design a new category too? In any case, American Gods > Westworld.

No, that’s been around in various forms since the 1970s. It’s actually one of those categories where the best winner tends to win more often than not:
