First console games were Super Mario, Duck Hunt, Tetris and Wizards of Might and Magic for the NES. I also remember playing some kind of ALF game for the Apple II, stored on those old giant floppies.
My cousins showed me their new Atari 2600, and sat me down in front of DEFENDER. I believe I did better than they did after a try or two.
They had some sort of older paddle-controller console before that, but I don’t remember much about it. I may have played something Pong-esque on that, but I don’t know the details.
When I saw THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK for 2600 in a store later on, I asked for an Atari of my own, and soon began on the path to ruin.

Not really, it’s only really been about 30 years, and you can still find those games in arcades, XBOX Live, and emulators. Yes, the graphics were old, but the gameplay still stands the test of time for a lot of those.
That’s the funny thing, for all of us that are near 40 years old (myself included) we grew up with video games, and not just playing them, I mean. We aged as the gaming industry did. So when we were kids, games were young also. So for me, those still are “awesome games.”
The weirdest thing: how many grandparents/retirees are gamers? I’d have to say it’s probably less than 1/2 % of all gamers. In 25 years, what will the gaming industry be like? Will they be making games for seniors, like they make games for kids?

The first console game that I remember as greatness was River Raid. My buddy had it and we played the hell out of it.
The arcade port of Super Mario Bros. I was 5. Daunted by the freaky moving cabinet of After Burner II, I was too scared to play until some kid left his game in the middle of 1-2 and I jumped on for free.

I think I started with Pac-Man and/or Pole Position. My first system was a hand-me-down Intellivision. I was the king of Frogger and Beauty and the Beast.
For me it was Asteroids, played on a computer my dad brought home from work on rare occasions.
If we’re talking consoles, it was either something random that I can’t remember on an Atari, or the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/Track Meet combo (complete with the lightgun and power pad) on the NES.
Rampage in the arcade. Best 25 cents I ever spent.
Did anyone here play Bird vs Dr J in 1988. I think it was for commodore 64 something like that. A friend of mine had that game ,but i forgot what system it was for. We used to play that all day long.
I can’t remember the first game I played. I do remember the first game I ever rented. Legend of Zelda for the NES.

Hell yes. Dr J vs Bird actually came out in about 85 and then they took it to another level with the dunk contest and 3 point shootout for Jordan vs Bird in 88 also for commodore 64. It then came out for nintendo but I consider people who first played it then to be way behind the curve.

I’d also like to add that Mike Tyson’s Punchout, Contra, and Techmo Bowl were phenomenal.
The first and most notable arcade pizza place games for me were the classics Pac Man and Ms Pac Man, Pole Position, Galaga, and 1942. Hyped up arcade sessions in a pizza place or even more amazingly a convenience store are so distinctly an 80s thing.

I’d argue that with games like Brain Age the industry is reaching out in that direction already,

BC’s Quest for Tires (Commodore 64)
Coleco Vision or Intellivision, I can’t remember which. The only game I can remember is Burger Time. Around the same time my Dad bought an IBM PC and I played one of the earlier Kings Quest games on that. That game was really frustrating, the dude moved so slow. Also, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy text-based game. I was horrible at that, but I was like 8 or something. After that my Mom got a Mac and Loderunner was hot on that. I also played Flight Simulator but I would always crash instantly.

It was multi platform on different home computers, and I played it on my Apple //c (1983)
But you’re probably talking about it’s sequel (1988)
