Started tonight. A history of the space program using new footage and interviews.
I know this story has been told many times before, but I think it deserves to be told over and over again until we once again find our passion for exploration.
At this point I sadly think that as a species we have lost all curiosity. Except when it comes to who some young starlet is banging.
I would be ready to give up everything in my life for a chance to see with my own eyes what is out there. Roy Neary made the right choice.
Edit: I know I sound like a broken record anytime something like that comes up but it really bothers me that much.

Pretty sure Asimov touches on this in a few novels.

Stuff like this…especially in ridiculously Hi-Def…well, I know it’s the closest I’ll ever be to going into space. The preview alone sent a chill up my spine.
God, I want us to go back. If only there were a few billion dollars we could siphon into the space program…hmmm…where could we have misplaced that…

I am sure they will be re-airing it. They have really pushed the HD on this one. Sucks I don’t have an HD TV yet. Still great stuff to watch.
My favorite part from last night was when they talked about the first spacewalk, and you get to hear the talk between the capsule and Houston:

Good stuff. Plus even interview with Neil Armstrong on it.
I made this appointment viewing on Sunday night. I’m a geek for space-related fare, and even though I have heard many of these stories before, I still enjoy watching them. I am amazed that so many of the astronauts and Houston control employees are still alive.

Fixed for clarification, because clearly we have never been to space and it’s just a conspiracy to keep us in awe while the Man steals our freedoms and moneys.

Count me amongst the local space geeks. I was eight when we landed on the moon, and I love pretty much any entertainment about real-world space exploration.
Can’t wait for this to hit Bluray. It’ll be a nice addition to the trifecta of awesome that is From the Earth to the Moon, The Right Stuff, and Apollo 13.

This show is amazing and infuriating all at the same time. Someone should get Osama on the horn and tell him to change his focus from eliminating the White Devil to colonizing the Moon so we can get some more funding back into the space program.
Dammit. Discovery is one of, like, three channels I really miss from not having cable. Just looking at some of those Hubble* images on that interactive constellation map makes me want to dig up some space exploration discs on Netflix.

*Meant to add… One of the telescopes that some of those images came from was named “Chandra”. Is/was that in homage to Dr. Chandra, the creator of HAL?

I always regretted being born too late to really appreciate the whole space race. I lived out east of Orlando in the early 70s and I remember the ground shaking when the Saturns would take off for the Skylab and Apollo/Soyuz missions, and we were still a good thirty minutes away from the Cape. At the time, all I knew was “Rockets! Cool!” But to have been old enough to appreciate the grandeur and the danger and the sheer magnificence of all of it would have really been something. The shuttles just don’t come close.
I’m a space and aviation junkie, just look at my avatar for goodness sake, but I have to say I’m kind of disappointed with this series thus far. The footage has been great and I’m hoping for some really good stuff from the Apollo era. What bothers me is they seem to be glossing over the stories behind the missions. They didn’t really give any nod to the engineering hurtles. During Mercury all they really said was that they blew up some rockets. They should tell us why. In addition, there are examples of these space craft in museums. How about getting an astronaut, a high def camera and giving us a tour? Wouldn’t you like to take a peak at the inside of Freedom 7 in HD?
On a side note, I was able to record the shuttle launch a week ago in HD and it was damn cool. The wife and kid were out of the house and I cranked up the volume. Very nice.
