Hmmm. Hadn’t really thought about it.
You did remind me I’m overdue for a re-watch of L.A. Confidential.

Any reason to rewatch LA Confidential is a damn good reason.
Went to a screening of this tonight. It’s not quite Kiss Kiss Bang Bang-level-great, but it’s really entertaining all the same. Crowe and Gosling are both terrific. Crowe in particular gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as an absolutely unstoppable steamroller of a man. Which is sorta in his wheelhouse, even in a more outwardly comic direction, but he’s still damn good. Probably his best work in a while, actually. Gosling has the more comical character of the two, and he and Crowe (and the actress who plays Gosling’s daughter) play off each other well, but they don’t quite have RDJ-and-Kilmer-chemistry. Not quite as many memorable lines either, but it’s still damn funny and the physical comedy and visual humor is pretty outstanding throughout. I don’t want to spoil any of the jokes that haven’t been in the trailers so far, but there is a pretty spectacular subversion of a typical storytelling set-up that had me howling. And add Matt Bomer’s John-Boy to the list of great Shane Black henchmen. Keith David gets a nice punch-up with Crowe at one point too.
I’ll be interested to see what people think of the third act, which goes to some very cynical places (even if it ends more optimistically on a personal level). Still, definitely worth seeing, especially if you’re a Shane Black fan. A nice change of pace from the typical summer film.
How is this a character poster? I thought this was just Keith David’s Christmas Card photo. I assume he is like that all the time when he isn’t acting.
AGreat to hear the positive reaction to the film. This is by far my most anticipated film. Also on a side note looks like Black is getting Predator going very soon. Nice to see him making films at quicker pace.
I am impatiently wait for this movie “The Nice Guys”. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe both looks awesome in this movie trailer. Specially Russell Crowe in his Blue Leather Jacket. I really want this one, Sky-Seller online shop have this jacket hope this will perfectly match.
AWhere can I learn more about buying the jacket from this movie Eli?? I must know!
A7pm Thursday screening, can’t wait. Hopefully the people who complain about there not being enough mid-budget films for adults get out and see this.
ASuch a good time.
Just so so enjoyable.
Fun interview with Black on the Nerdist Writer’s Panel:
Hearing lots of good things about this. I’m hoping all the fun bits haven’t been spoiled in the first trailer. For the first time in ages I’ve deliberately stayed away from the remaining marketing stuff (apart from the fake therapist sessions, which were delightful).
Same here, been trying to cover my ears about this one lately. I loved that redband trailer but I wish I could have seen that swimming pool shot first on the big screen.
AThat and the gun through the window, the toilet stall and the shot of the swan dive from inside the elevator. Dearly hoping they aren’t the high points.
I’m also almost looking forward as much to the Shane Black retrospective I’m going to have in the run up as I am to seeing this.
The movie is just so enjoyable all the way through. Having seen some of those beats in the trailer shouldn’t hurt it too much, though I understand that minor anxiety. Heheheh
I believe I cut myself off after seeing the first trailer. Never really watched it again after that so as to not let any of those things imprint in my brain and get me second-guessing the movie.
“mmmm I wonder when that shot from the trailer is coming… it must be soon… oh there it is…”

Oddly enough, my wife has been looking forward to this film even more than I have. She absolutely adores KKBB, and she was over the moon when I showed her the trailers for this. Every week, ‘does THE NICE GUYS come out this week?’ has been her mantra. If possible, I’m gonna take her to this tomorrow night just to shut her up.
I just love BIG STOCKY CROWE in movies. I hope we see more of him like this.
The humor in this movie isn’t nearly as rat-a-tat-tat as KISS KISS BANG BANG, but I think that’s perfectly natural as this movie doesn’t indulge in the kind of RDJ 4th wall-breaking narration throughout. I think there’s just a bit of narration from Crowe at the beginning, but that’s it. For the most part, the movie plays its tale a lot straighter than KKBB does.
If KKBB played a lot into Harry and Harmony’s love of the Johnny Gossamer crime novels, this movie basically IS a Johnny Gossamer crime novel.
Glad to see that Ottman came back to co-compose the score for Black. I love his score on KKBB.
ASomeone give Peter Weir the money to make an “over the hill recapturing his youth for one last time to rescue his pal” Aubrey/Maturin movie, dagnabbit. Basically Wrath of Khan with the Spanish captain as his nemesis.
Then bring him back as a grouchy Jor-el giving his newly resurrected son a proper talking to about suns and people joing him there.
Both Crowe and Gosling narrate their intro, but that’s it.
And yeah, Crowe is great in this. He’s got terrific comic timing (even though he’s more the straight man than Gosling is), completely convincing as a somewhat over-the-hill badass, and it’s really terrific how the film ends up developing his character, particularly his parental relationship with Gosling’s daughter.
AI love that he’s always declining drinks without the movie going into it any more than that. There’s a lot of character stuff that the movie handles like that.
It’s very appreciated.
