The Films of 1995

Everyone put in good work on Congo except Dylan Walsh.

Even there, I don’t think he’s terrible. He just doesn’t elevate his character like the rest try to.

“DON’T TOUCH MY SESAME CAKE!”

Only good thing about the first Dredd was how they got Mean Machine Angel and Hammerstein the ABC Warrior to look so perfect for fans of the comics. Otherwise it is a piece of shit. Looking back, the fact it is actually fascist apologism instead of the satire it should have been makes so much sense now, what with fucking best buds Mango & Trash

And many more. Great year for movies.

Been racking my brain all week trying to think of a better year for movies starring David Caruso and I simply cannot.

This week’s new releases for Valentine’s Day dates:

Boys on the Side

Miami Rhapsody

One for the bros:

The Jerky Boys: The Movie

And one for the horror crowd:

Ebert review

I love that trailer.

“This whole thing has been staged!”

The In the Mouth of Madness trailer scared the shit out of me in front of Dumb and Dumber, though it was the first time I heard John Carpenter’s name in my life.

I watched The Jerky Boys last year for the first time and laughed way more than I thought I would.

Some others I forgot:

GoldenEye
Dead Presidents
To Die For
Angus
Billy Madison

This week’s offerings at the multiplex:

Serious cinephiles have Just Cause, The Madness of King George and Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle.

Lowbrow comedy enthusiasts can check out Heavyweights (Ben Stiller?!) or Billy Madison (I admit, I watched this in the theater).

I think that The Brady Bunch Movie was the first meta-movie updating of a vintage concept. I didn’t see it, but my roommate noted the good work by Gary Cole as Mike Brady.

JUST CAUSE is quite entertaining junk.

Ed Harris is absolutely unhinged!

I did an Ed Harris in Just Cause scene for Theater class in high school.

I hope you went as over-the-top as he did!

I saw BILLY MADISON in theaters as well. Still my favorite Sandler comedy. A triumph.

Granted we were children, but my friend and I about died laughing during BILLY MADISON.

Madison is still my favorite Sandler comedy. There’s a mean-spirited and surreal streak running through this that rarely came up again.

Ed Harris is basically a Florida Man Sideshow Bob in Just Cause.

1995 was also the year that Godzilla died (again).

And the year Gamera returned to the screen!

How are those '90s GAMERA movies, anyway?

They’re just as good as the Heisei Godzilla films IMHO. Even better than in some cases (Looking at you, Space Godzilla).

About 10 years back, I had a death in the family that completely destroyed me. To distract myself, I watched the '90s Gamera trilogy all in one night. And you know what? It worked. I’ll always be grateful to that big ass turtle for helping me during a difficult time.
