If you were a kid in the 70’s/80’s Saturday morning cartoons were what you looked forward to every week. Heck they would even have primetime specials in the fall to preview what the new season of cartoons would be for each given network.
But like with everything else that is/was great the tide shifted and saturday morning cartoons for the most part have gone the way of the dodo. Its a shame that my 6 yr. old niece will never get to experience the joy of getting up early on saturday morning with your favorite bowl of cereal to watch hours of cartoon fun.
Very interesting article…I also find it sad that Saturday mornings are so devoid of cartoons…I remember as late as the mid 90s, fox, cbs, and nbc used to run saturday morning cartoons that were actually somewhat interesting to me. I obviously outgrew that period, but it seems like the choices made in the programs they show is very limited also. It seems like saturday mornings are “japanese sell this card game” shows all the fucking time. I have no interest in that crap and I doubt most kids do.
In any case, Cartoon Network is truly the home for animation creativity. The things they have done in the past 5 years from dexter’s lab, powerpuff girls, samurai jack, adult swim, the toonami block (which actually used to show very high quality japanese animation), etc. have really been like a cartoon renaissance. But the network shows all cartoons so strangely enough, their saturday morning lineup is actually pretty weak compared to their primetime/afternoon hour stuff.
The poor little bastards.Although I seem to be in the minority,I felt bad for kids when fucking Tiny Toons came out.Yeah,I said it,I’m one of the people who doesn’t find that show amusing.Tried to be clever like the old Looney Tunes but tried way too hard.

I too mourn the loss of the traditional Saturday morning cartoon marathon. However, as someone else said, the really good cartoons were always on weekdays anyway.
Come on, a lot of us Otaku are happy with most of the Anime that’s being shown here…And FOX is going to air “Tokyo Mew Mew” this fall.
But, there were some good live action shows that were cancelled before their time-NBC’s answer to NKOTB, “The Guys Next Door”, which played out like a cross between “The Monkees” and “The Kids in the Hall”. Dammit, I miss that…
When I was a kid we had Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, Eek the Cat and many other quality cartoons. That wasn’t that long ago, and now there are no good cartoons on network t.v.

Like when Chris gets psychic powers, but wastes it on playing “Jeopardy” and who could forget Damon’s song “Bad Hair Day”? And the episode where they didn’t have a plot for the show? I’m telling you, that was truly a show ahead of its time.
Didn’t starscream and Cobra commander have the same voice. Maybe it’s just my bad memory or heavy coke habit, but I remember them having that same, scratchy voice as they cursed the good guys for foiling another plot of theirs.

Yes, they did. The man that performed them both, Chris Latta, was also originally going to play Mr. Burns on “The Simpsons” until he was diagnosed with throat cancer. He passed away in the early '90s due to a heart attack.

So true. The Guys Next Door was funnier than it had any right to be. It’s so unusual for a show like that to have had such sharp writing.
They should put out a CD with all the great parody songs that never got released, like “Bad Hair Day,” “Bobby Can’t Dance,” and “Home Videos.”
