The Cable/Satellite Wars

DirectTV was directing viewers to that website for their Viacom fix so Viacom pulled the plug. lol

It was ridiculous how Viacom-owned stations looked on DirectTV the other day:

Viacom had one ticker telling people it was DirectTV’s fault and DirectTV inserted their own blaming Viacom.

Yeah, and if you went to Comedy Central’s website earlier today (and it may still be there), you were forced to watch a 90 second or so clip bitching about Directv. And I just saw a commercial on Dish from AMC telling you to “ditch the Dish”. I wonder how much $ it costs them to create these things? Probably as much as they’re arguing about.

And Daily Show/Colbert Report episodes are NOT showing up on Hulu. I had Monday’s episodes in my queue, and now they’re gone. The most recent episodes available are from June 28th.

EDIT: My bad, they’re on vacation again. Could have sworn I had new eps in my queue though…

Seriously, fuck you Viacom. And thank you DirecTV for sticking to your guns about price increases. I will be requesting an account credit because of this bullshit though. I actually watch a good amount of the channels that were cut off.

there was a new episode of Futurama on tonight that I’ve been prevented from seeing…now, it’s getting personal !

FWIW:

Everyone on DirectTV has all of the Encore channels free as of now. The indication that I received from the customer service rep that I talked to is that it’ll remain free while this Viacom issue is in dispute.

Also, I got a $5 monthly credit for my inconvenience. I could have pressed for more but…in all honesty…I’m backing DirectTV in this dispute and I honestly have no quarrel with them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve taken issue with some things that Direct TV has done in the past but in this case, I’m on the DTV side in this.

Then, once I found out how much ViacomCEO Philippe Dauman’s current and previous salaries are/were…

fuck Viacom.

I’m “backing” nobody in this dispute, I just want some free shit to compensate for the inconvenience of not being able to watch Colbert etc when I want to on my TV.

So we get $5 credit for one month (I called DTV up too and was offered exactly the same) and what I was told was a free month of Encore aka the shittiest premium movie channel collection of them all. Vs Dish/AMC people who got a free Roku box and $30 credit? Hmmm…

Quick question, what do you get from Dish if you already own a Roku box?

I am crossposting this over in the Breaking Bad thread…

This could add a new layer to the DTV/Viacom tussle.

As you know, there’s a lot of contractual wrangling right now between satellite services and program providers; DirecTV and Viacom are in a nasty fight, and the owner of AMC and other channels is battling with Dish Network. While Viacom has created collateral damage by pulling online replays of its shows for all viewers (so DirecTV subscribers can’t see them another way), AMC is making Sunday’s season premiere of “Breaking Bad” available to Dish subscribers. The official word:
In response to DISH’s recent drop of AMC to gain leverage in an unrelated lawsuit, the network will provide DISH customers access to the highly anticipated return of the Emmy® Award-winning drama “Breaking Bad” on Sunday, July 15, at 10PM EST. AMC is offering a special live stream of “Breaking Bad’s” season five premiere to all DISH subscribers on amctv.com.
Beginning at 3 PM ET on Friday, July 13, DISH subscribers can register for access to the live stream at
AMC | Watch TV Shows & Movies Online | Stream Current Episodes
.
AMC stated: “Every cable, phone and satellite company other than DISH carries AMC and its popular programming, including “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Mad Men,” in their basic package. AMC wants its loyal DISH viewers to experience the excitement of the “Breaking Bad” premiere at the same time as their friends and neighbors, and we want to give DISH customers an extra week to switch providers so they can enjoy the rest of the season.”
The explosive drama series that Variety calls “simply one of TV’s great addictions,” stars three-time Emmy® winner for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Bryan Cranston (Walt White) leading an unforgettable ensemble cast including 2010 Emmy® winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman), Anna Gunn (Skyler White), Dean Norris (Hank Schrader), Betsy Brandt (Marie Schrader), RJ Mitte (Walter, Jr.), Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman), and Jonathan Banks (Mike).

I gotta get on that free NFL Sunday Ticket.

Fucker. You beat me to it Smile

I am just glad I have overpriced cable at this point. This is the biggest reason why I am glad I have continued to drag my feet in moving to a satellite provider.

just want to congratulate AT&T for coming out to our house, and going a BANG up job installing our new TV service.

These guys really take their time, and do a great job. Lord knows I couldn’t lay the cable across the rug!

Bite thy tongue! They are showing my favorite Stallone movie on Encore Romance right now, Rhinestone. You know how out of print that movie is?

Calling tomorrow to get that account credit. I am definitely backing DirecTV in this dispute, but I do feel they should do something like an account credit.

I called on the first day and didn’t get shit. No credit. No Sunday Ticket. Nothing. I think I’m too much of a softie and don’t push it too far. I always fear I’ll threaten to cancel and they’ll call my bluff.

You are weak.

I used to work in such a department for a cell phone company. If customers threatened to cancel we had a pool of options to keep the customer on. Pretty much every company will have this type of department. However, choose your words carefully. “I may be canceling my service soon because…” works way better than, “I want to cancel…” The problem is, 99% of the people in these departments are young 20-somethings. They often don’t care, or hate their jobs. If you find one that really doesn’t care at all, they may just cancel. I made this mistake – even knowing the ins and outs of it all.

I was trying to save money on a cell phone bill and called to “cancel”. I was hoping they would give a credit, drop my plan or provide some sort of monetary compensation. Instead, the rep pulls up my account, verifies my info and says, “ok, it will be deactivated in the next twenty minutes.” Of course, I was flustered as shit and said, “well cancel that – I didn’t know it was going to be so quick. I will call back later today.”

I don’t think you have to be stern at all. In fact, I would say you may not get as far that way. Just explore the option of canceling and choose your words wisely. And, if you have a contract then follow-up with “…I know I have a contract and I don’t want to cancel, but I may have to just pay whatever fees rack up unless…”

The other day I called to cancel XM, and the guy offered me two free months, and I took it right away. After I hung up, I thought I should have held out just to see how much they would offer me. With a service like XM, I really didn’t care if I had it or not. When I call back before my two months are up to cancel again, I may try to see how much they will give me. If they just up and cancel it, then I’m perfectly fine with that.

Something like DirecTV, though, I didn’t want to risk them actually cancelling it. But yeah, if I went in with more of a plan and chose my words carefully, as opposed to just asking “Hey, are you going to give me anything for losing these channels? No? Okay, then.”

Truth be told, my plan a few months ago was to cut the cord and cancel DirecTV. At the last second my girlfriend put the kibosh on that plan. She didn’t want to live without NFL Sunday Ticket. I love my girlfriend.
