The 2010 Elections Thread

I know it’s over a year out, but there was some interesting talk in the Arnold thread and I didn’t want to derail that thread with it. Plus, after the upcoming recess, things are going to start to gear up and if you’re a political dork like me, you have an investment in Senate and Governor races for states that aren’t your own.

Although the New York gubernatorial race is going to be a fun one. I’m hoping that Andrew Cuomo changes his mind about running, because he’s kicking the shit out of Paterson in the polls. Giuliani is still wavering about running, and would easily defeat Paterson, whereas a Cuomo ticket would beat Giuliani, but not by much.

The California election, as mentioned, is going to be a fun one, too. I didn’t know until it was mentioned that Newsom was running. I fully support that, even if the guy has an ego the size of Mount Rushmore. He’s environmentally friendly, pro-worker (even if he did have to lay off a bunch of city employees to balance the budget), and has done a lot for immigration rights. And his fervent support of gay rights is well-known. I’m actually excited to see how his campaign develops.

Newsom should do well with a lot of California’s key demographics. Though he’ll probably do poorly among dudes who have discovered that their best friend slept with their wife. It’s gonna be an uphill battle to sway them.

People think Jerry Brown has the edge. But the guy hasn’t officially declared, yet. Plus this air of inevitability smacks of Hillary Clinton. Not to mention at Brown’s age, that guy would be a one-termer right there.

Hey, we have a 2010 Elections Thread! What a fun little day to kick-start this thread again.

Primaries today in Pennsylvania (along with a special election for Murtha’s old seat), Arkansas, and Kentucky. Sestack might take out Specter, Lincoln should hold off Halter before getting drubbed by Boozman in November, and Ron Paul’s kid looks likely to get the GOP nod in Kentucky. Oregon has primaries today as well.

Also, we have 8-term Rep. Souder ® from Indiana resigning today after admitting an affair with a staffer. And we have Connecticut AG and curent Senate Candidate Blumenthal (D) getting caught making “misspeaking” (or just outright lying) about his non-existent service record in Vietnam.

WWE CEO and Republican Senate hopeful Linda McMahon pushed that story about Blumenthal through to the NYT. This shit just got real in CT.

Tea Party favorite Rand Paul, son of Rep. Ron Paul, will win a GOP Senate primary election in Kentucky, CNN projects.

Sestak won PA. Hell yes, fuck “New Democrats.” Now, let’s see Lincoln bite it, too.

Murtha’s seat is staying blue.

This just occurred to me, but please, please tell me that Ron Paul didn’t name his kid after his favorite Objectivist author… Ayn Rand, Rand Paul? If so, you have got to be shark fucking me.

Yes indeedy!

We now have a politician named after a typewriter. (Ayn got her “name” from the Remington Rand type writer she used to bang out scripts for MGM back in the day)

Blumenthal’s just lucky McMahon didn’t hit him over the head with a folding metal chair during the press conference.

Could be worse, they could have a kiss my ass contest with Blumenthal.

GOP wins Hawaii house seat, first time in 20 years:

I don’t quite get how the fact that Obama grew up there 30+ years ago has to do with much of anything. But still, a big win for the GOP.

From everything I read, it had more to do with Hawaii’s politics and the Dems’ fumbling the ball there than anything else.

Also, any congressional district that Obama carried in '08 that loses to a GOP seat is generally considered a ding at Obama. It goes that way every mid-term for every President.

Arleen Specter’s loss is more of a hit to the President, considering that would be his 4th backing of a candiate and 4th loss. Obama has zero political capital with voters it seems.

-I think that Pa will go Democratic for Senator. Toomey comes across as a less charming Rick Santorum. Plus he used to work on Wall Street (unfortunately, Sestak voted for the bailout). Not sure about Governor.

-Its a shame that this Conneticut guy is fucking up the democrats chances of holding on to an easy seat. Linda Macmahon couldn’t even sell the Stone Cold Stunner correctly on Raw. This could cost the Democrats the Senate.

I am predicting a 51-49 Senate. Could be Republican or Democrat. The Republicans will take back the house.

Corbett will win governor. Onorato isn’t even really liked out here in the wilderness.

As for Senate, I agree. Sestak should win. He better. Toomey’s a fucking joke.

Republicans won’t take either house, but it’ll be a lot closer IMO.

My question is this: when is the Democratic Party going to understand that the Democratic Party historically stands for a particular ideology? I am fucking sick and tired of these DLC motherfuckers fucking up the Party and the nation.

I know not everyone likes Bill Maher (let’s not get into that)

But this is truly hilarious (IMHO)

On the subject of the Alabama Gubernatorial Election 2KX

Okay, it looks like right now that The democrats will lose the house but not the Senate.

-I can’t believe that Santorum 2.0 is leading Joe Sestak in the polls for PA senate. I mean Toomey is responsible for this mess. He was a derivatives trader for fucks sake.

-Obama should just cram in whatever he can through reconciliation, cause his domestic agenda is through after this year (Energy, Global Warming, Financial Reform).

Unlike fiscal year 2009, the Democrats didn’t draft the budget to leave open the procedural solution of reconciliation for any of those thing. So, if the House is lost–I don’t think it will be–the agenda is pretty much just dead.
