So, I saw the "Battlestar Galactica" miniseries

…and it SUCKS!!!

They don’t even both with “futuristic” costumes beyond the military folks. It’s all regular ol’ 2003 outfits for some reason.

There is no plot.

You see cylons twice - once at the beginning and once in a museum. The “7 of 9” rip-off cylon is mostly in Baltar’s subconscious.

The new Cylon raiders look like Batman’s flyer with a big Cylon head on the front.

To make up for days when, obviously, they didn’t have enough time for coverage, they’ll have talking scenes where the camera just 360’s around the actors as they yammer and yammer and yammer on.

There’s about five or six “sets” and you never feel like you’re “on” the Galactica. It’s truly hard to suspend your disbelief. It feels like you’re on the Star Trek “ride” in Vegas or on re-constituted “SG-1” sets.

IT’S BOOOOOOORING!!! Like, “Children of Dune” boring. NOTHING HAPPENS. Even when the Cylons attack the planet, all you get are some silly CG mushroom clouds and a newsreport that clicks off. There is NO scope. You never get the idea that “humanity” is in peril.

The only thing interesting is that the ships - Cylons and Colonials alike - can blink in and out of hyperspace. That and the Cylon Raider missiles leave smoke trails through space, so it looks cool when they fire about a dozen torpedos at once.

Beyond that, the miniseries is languid and rather dull. I’ll put up a full review later, but remember “Robocop: Prime Directives?” That’s basically what this is with an “Earth: Final Conflict” feel.

Did it have the music?

If I know nothing about the original [and am not obsessing about the changes], will i like it?

If I’m lobotomized and sitting in a bed drooling on myself, will I like it?

You compare it to Children of Dune, which I loved, and to Robocop PD, which I hated. I think based on your description I will lower my expectations. Hey, at least it’s free.

Ron Moore.

Running full speed into a freeway embuttment is fairly low cost as well.

Yet I wouldn’t do that either.

I don’t know when enough of you are going to have learned the lesson under no circumstances do you ever watch a program with the following words attached:

" A Scifi channel original series/or production"

How many mental kicks to the nuts does it take for you guys to learn your lesson? Those people could fuck up a peanut butter sandwich, even without the jelly.

Yeah. Farscape and Taken were real nut smashers.

Know your role…

I was talking with Micah on Saturday when he told me he was reviewing the entire 20 hour Taken dvd.

I felt compassion…

It’s difficult to say really. Every time I think maybe, just maybe somebody might have gotten something right. And then the first early scenes get disseminated…

Some are optimists and feel Bonnie Hammer might be the next one hit by Al Qaeda.

Meh. Hehe. I’ll watch it anyways. Just to make fun of it. Never saw the original though.

Stop! Hammer Time!

I just wonder who the frizzy headed blond heartbreaker who fucked Ron Moore up but good in a past life was. Cause damned if that talentless fucker can’t do something science fiction without making the temptress a little blond number.

Although I still love me some of Roswell’s Emilie de Ravin…

Not surprised one single bit.

Damn shame really.

Now, maybe they can throw Hatch a friggin bone!

No.

And why bother with this when the original is out there?

Oh God. Children of Dune. I waded through three days of that just to see that one fight scene they kept on hyping up through the adverts.

And it lasted, like, fifteen seconds.

As for Sci Fi Minis, the best was Taken, and even that was plodding and incomprehensible.

If they’re going to do a mini, then they need to flesh out a plot first, along with likable characters and less dialogue.

Taken was HORRIBLE, just HORRIBLE. But Dune and Children of Dune were both IMO great, and I have been a huge fan of Stargate SG-1 since 97, even though season 7 has been sorely disapointing so far.

So, some Scifi original programming is good. I think BG looks cool, and I am not going to let one person’s negitive reviews stop me from watching it. That being said, I’ll prolly be back here December 10th curing and railing the producers of this one.

Hopefully it hits him right in the temple.

But the real question for SJR is: Did you like the Star Trek “ride” at the Hilton in Vegas?

:Ron Moore.

Yup. The same Ron Moore who wrote “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” Best episode of ST: TNG. Period. And now he’s doing fine work on Carnivale.

:Yeah. Farscape and Taken were real nut smashers.

The fourth season of Farscape was an unrepentent pile of shit, some of the most poorly written dreck ever aired on SciFi, easily erasing memories of the solid work that had come in the three years before it. Here’s an idea – let’s undermine all our existing characters and bring on a bunch of uninteresting new ones! Better yet, we’ll pull the pregnancy card to see if we can amp up our flagging ratings while simultaneously gutting one of the most complexly written female characters on television. And hey, after we get cancelled for going overbudget by thirty million bucks in one season and losing audience members by the droves, we’ll blame it on SciFi, the network that has time and again done nothing but support us.

Genius.

See, I’m not surprised at all that Galactica 2.0 is pure shite, seeing that the source material wasn’t anything more than a Star Wars rip with a heavy-handed metaphor. Try as you might to polish a turd. You only end up with smelly hands.

And by the way, Richard Hatch is a LUNATIC. One of the most deluded men alive.
