So, anyone going to watch tonight? Any news on whether it’s worth checking out? Will it be mighty like the Shield and Nip/Tuck? Will Dennis Leary look any more gaunt than he does in the previews? I figure I’ll give it a shot since the aforementioned f/x shows have been damn good.

I’ll check it out, like you said FX original series have been suprisingly good, plus Denis Leary.
It really is a shame that The Job got well…jobbed by abc. That was a fun show, Leary deserves to be on TV (and NOT starring in AWFUL AWFUL direct to video movies*)
*this was mostly referring to the Luis Guzman and Elizabeth Hurley movie I was forced to watch the other year with him as the main character, a cop with a bad back…he can keep making movies like Final as long as he wants.
I plan to tune in. “The Job” was a great show, and I was very sad to see it go.

I’ve heard it’s the best new show of the season. If you liked the Job, you’ll like this.
Is it fast-paced comedy like The Job? I think I’ve only seen one ad but I got a mostly Firemen-Are-Awesome non-comical vibe from it.
I thought it was quite good. At first, I was mildly offended by the flippant treatment of Ground Zero, etc., but then it just clicked with me. There was both respect for that situation as well as a reminder that laughter helps the even great pain. The dialogue is very NYPD Blue-rapidfire style. Leary is perfect in this role.
I really enjoyed it. The language was appropriately salty, but not annoyingly so. Lots of really funny, fast dialogue and some entertaining characters. The visual device of Tommy’s memories worked well for me, and I assume we’ll see more of that. I hope this show lasts for a while.

I loved this show. It was a bit more comedic than I thought it was going to be, but it worked well in the dynamic of the show. The personalities and attitudes of the fire-fighters were spot on with reality and you can tell he had the full backing of his foundation, and the FDNY.
Leary was perfect in his role as well. He completely made the show and owned the Tommy Gavin character, although I don’t think it was that hard for him considering it was based at least partially in reality.
I’ll be checking it out this Friday (had a friend tape it for me). I can’t wait!! “The Job” was the best comedy since Seinfeld and was unjustly cancelled… fucking ABC.
I really enjoyed the premiere episode and the season looks like it will be quite entertaining. The whole “talking and seeing dead people” thing reminded me of Nicolas Cage’s paramedic in Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead, in that both characters were haunted by those they weren’t able to save.
There were certain elements throughout this first hour that make the whole season worth watching.
- Gavin paying his kids to find out about his ex-wife.
- Gavin faking his appreciation of the cookies his daughter made and then giving them to his Captain.
- The chief’s love of gambling, how much it rules his life, and his disdain for the computerized female voice when a call to the station comes in.
- The whole breakdown of naming Mike, the probie who has just joined the force. “Are you Jewish?” “No, we already got a Mike the Wop.”
Here’s hoping this show does well and doesn’t get cancelled like Lucky.
I also enjoyed the premiere and its definitely on my Tivo with aseason pass.
The one thing that just didnt work for me, was Leary’s character talking to the dead people he couldnt rescue. I mean I understand what it represents and what the creators of the show are trying to show the viewers here, but it just didn’t seem to fit with the overall feel of the show.
Hopefully it is not going to be an integral part of the show. From the upcoming scenes, this show looks to get really interesting and hopefully really good.
I was totally with the show until they had the lead character getting drunk alone on the beach as the sun went down. Never seen that before.
I will watch again. But if they pull that shit again, I’m gone.
Also, didn’t THE SHIELD’s second season end with Coldplay?
It was the first season. Last episode, Trouble. Yeah, I saw the same parrallels myself. I thought it was damn good. I’ll have to watch the next episode to have a total opinion, but at the moment I like it better than Nip/Tuck. And it was a hell of a lot funnier than I expected.

another solid episode. good range of people against an issue, people accepting an issue, and people not really bothered by an issue and they just kind of don’t acknowledge it as an issue.
this is fast becoming appointment TV for me (luckily I can be lazy and not keep the appointment though, thanks many reruns on cable)
Last night’s episode was great. I also liked how they tackled the subject of homosexuality, especially considering how firefighting has come to be known as the job of tough guys.
My favorite scenes included:
- The scene where the two young firemen attempt to explain “metrosexuality” to the older firemen and keep stumbling.
- Where the young fireman proudly announces he has had his “teabag” waxed and the ongoing scenes with him dealing with the intolerable itching as a result of said waxing (especially the scene w/ the Gold Bond and the cooking spray.)
- The scene where Tommy is spying on Jimmy’s widow and her friend in the store and is approached by the kid who goes to school with Gavin’s older daughter and their ensuing conversation.
- The scene between Gavin and Jimmy where he talks about seeing Jimmy’s widow in the store and her friend that looked like a “dyke.”
I was looking at the IMDb and was surprised to learn that Jack McGee, who plays Chief Jerry Reilly, is a former NYC firefighter. Also, I saw Charles Durning listed among the cast, so that means he appear in a role of some kind during the season.
It was great seeing Dean Winters (Ryan O’Reily from HBO’s Oz) pop up as Tommy Gavin’s brother. Here’s hoping we’ll see more of his character as the season progresses.
Also, the man who burned his wife in this episode played Valchek is Season 2 of The Wire and I believe that the actress that plays Jimmy’s widow also plays Jimmy McNulty’s estranged wife on The Wire.

Yep. That’s Callie Thorne, who actually sticks in my mind most as Detective Laura Ballard from the last couple seasons of the absolutely brilliant HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET.
