Our thread about PODCASTS

Great thread, Bucho. I also only listen to podcasts when I’m doing something, like the dishes or in the supermarket.

Film:
The usual. CHUD, /FILM, sometimes Filmspotting. Does anyone listen to Filmjunk? Jay Cheel usually has something to say and is quite funny. And it’s a hoot when Reed Farringdon is on. At his expense, but never mind.

Talk shows: WTF is great, the Ken jeung interview was fanatasic.

Serious discissions:
NPR. They’ve done the war on drugs, afghanistan. Should terrorists be treated as criminals or enemy combatants, the economy and many other subjects.

GPS with Fareed Zakaria. Topical discussions with high profile guests.
BBC Radio 5 daily topical call in with Nicky campbell.

SPORT:

BBC Sportsweek every sunday morning.

Also, i don’t get the hate for jo goldsmith. Sure the intro is too long but i think he’s a fun host.

I gave up on the /FILM cast, as I did the Adam Corolla one. Corolla is annoying because the show was fine when it was him one-on-one with a guest, then he went all morning zoo with it and it became terrible. Add to that his awful awful rants “Torture works because torture has always worked” etc that he repeats ad nauseum and I just unsubscribed.

Comedy Death Ray is great, moreso whenever Paul F Tompkins does his Ice-T impression (If you want a taster grab the episode from a couple of weeks back with Adam Scott).

Doug Loves Movies is great, and you can jump in at pretty much any point.

Uh Yeah Dude is fantastic, but it’s one of those “You need to get the personalities” type of deals. Once you do though it’s required listening.

For games there’s the one and only Giantbombcast, it’s funny as hell a lot of the time (Funnier than a lot of comedy podcasts).

For informative things you got “Stuff you missed in History Class”, “How stuff works” etc.

I don’t listen to any film centered podcasts. I used to listen to Carolla, but I have to agree with James in his comment that the zoo thing doesn’t work, but the one on ones are great. Cheech and Chong we pretty good with Adam.

My favorites are:
Radio Le Mans – I like racing, these guys cover it all with humor. Mostly centers on F-1, sports cars and Indycars. I dislike NASCAR, but I can tolerate a bunch of Brits and an Irish guy talking about it for 10 minutes.

This Week In Tech - The show has been up and down lately, but I like Leo Laporte’s style and what he is trying to do.

This American Life – Lots of good thought provoking stuff. Some of it is funny, some isn’t. That’s ok.

NPR – Live Concerts from All Songs Considered – I like live music.

Brain Damage – Mostly bootlegs of Pink Floyd concerts. Yes, I know bootlegs are not the best thing, but my folks weren’t going to let me see the Wall in LA when I was 5. This is the only way I can hear stuff like this.

I dig the shit outta Geek Week Live and First Dollar Gross. Obviously what makes these shows work is the chemistry of the podcasters which is why I also love IGN’s Channel Surfing. Eric Goldman and Matt Fowler could host any kind of online show and I’d watch.

You’re right, Carolla’s politics are sometimes dodgy but I can’t take him seriously enough to let them bug me. Teresa Strasser was a genuinely witty and funny addition but since she’s gone the resulting fill-ins have varied in quality, and Bald Bryan is wasted on sound effects. The stuff that comes out of the guy’s mouth is funnier than anything which comes out of his soundboard. Overall I can only agree that Carolla’s show is definitely less than what it used to be but he’s so much better than most of his comedic competition I still dig it.

Speaking of comedic competition, I listened to a few Doug Loves Movies episodes a couple of years ago and I found that guy quite lacking in witty hahas. I want to like him more because he’s just so gently likable, but his vibe is wildly hacky to me, so that show is entirely dependent on the quality of the guests.

I first listened to Uh Yeah Dude after I enjoyed their guest appearance on Jordan Jesse Go and found myself nonplussed at not just their popularity but the rabid devotion of some of their fans. I listened to a show and a half and didn’t find anything to be interested in. A year or so later I read a review which praised them in that same “you need to get the personalities” way so I gave them another shot and my response was the same.

Just what is it about Uh Yeah Dude that marks them out as special amongst the mountains of competition? I don’t hear it. I feel the same way about Never Not Funny. The popularity and praise befuddles the bejesus out of me.

The latest episode of Doug Loves Movies was awesome. He had 12 really superb comics on (Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, Jimmy Pardo, etc) and it was just very, very funny. Another “laugh out loud on the train” episode.

Just saw that A.V. Club posted it’s Best podcasts of 2010, about half of which I already subscribe to. Reading the comments there proves (like this thread) that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

To fully appreciate Pardo I think you’d have to:
a) like the band Chicago (and to lesser extent, Journey & KISS)
b) have worked in a record store in the 1980’s
c) listen to a few full-length episodes, not just the 22 minute free preview. There are a bunch a short video clips on YouTube from Season Three that convinced me it was worth subscribing to his show. But your mileage may vary. He’s a well-respected comedian in L.A. comedy circles – Conan liked him enough to re-hire him to warm-up the crowd for his new show.

My latest discovery is Greg Proop’s The Smartest Man in The World. Recorded live, it’s basically a monthly (?) topical comedy routine from the man.

From “Raspberries” (12/14/10)
On Qaddafi’s penchant for setting up a Bedouin tent in his hotel suite:

“That is fucking more than awesome.
That’s off the deep end of awesome.
That’s in the Mariana Trench of awesome…”

Heh. That’s such an AV Club list of podcasts. It couldn’t be more self-parodic if the Onion wrote it. Not that some of those shows aren’t good/great shows of course.

Fair enough Finnias, but I actually don’t think Pardo’s the problem. I’ve heard him be funny guesting on shows like JJGo and Carolla, so I know he’s got it in him. It’s more that the guys who surround him on NNF are apparently so witless they appear to diminish Pardo.

Thanks for pointing out Proops’ show though. I like that guy quite a bit.

I think I dig Drew “Moriarty” McWeeny more as a podcaster/broadcaster than I do as a print reviewer.

Read Drew’s account of The Woman screening at Sundance if you get a chance. Pretty awesome. He also has a cute-as-fuck video interview with Elmo (yes, THE Elmo) over at Hitfix.

For those who love Doug Loves Movies, Season One (2006-7) recently went on sale ($15) and it is great fun.

And my new favorite podcast is Paul Scheer’s How Did This Get Made? where he and a few friends dissect recent cinematic disasters. So far, they’ve tackled Burlesque, Season of the Witch and Old Dogs. Very funny and a must-listen for CHUD readers, IMO.

For fans of Dave Chen’s dulcet tones, he just launched his own show, apart from The /Filmcast, called The Chencast in which he broadens his scope to other media topics. Excellent stuff - he’s off to a good start.

Also, I recently got to see Marc Maron do a live WTF here in San Fran and it was awesome. I’m sure he’ll release it soon…

This weekend I’ll be seeing Pardo’s NNF live and possibly the Sklar Brothers podcast also.

Nice one Finnias. I’ve listened to a few episodes of the Sklar Brothers’ podcast and enjoyed them, but not so much they’ve become one of my regulars. They’re in the squad, they’re just sitting on the bench for now.

Kevin Pollack’s Chat Show is worth checking out too. It’s sort of a more toothless version of WTF but still quite entertaining and he’s Kevin Pollack so he gets some sweet guests.

Speaking of Pollak, I only just found out their now charging for his Chat Show episodes. When the show is broadcast live streaming, it’s free, but all of the archive is now a couple bucks each I think. Bummer, as I was starting that show from the beginning and only got up to Bierko.

Sklarbro Country is decent enough, but I could live without it. Their clearly scripted and innocent style of comedy is a tad off-putting, and that’s probably due to my interest in all the improv-like shows, including Death Ray, Doug Loves Movies and Carolla’s show. While I admire and welcome their love for all things sports, I can also find it with much more in depth and uncensored comedic take from “Spider and the Henchman” - Jon Salley and Kevin Hench’s sports podcast. And the occasional Bill Simmons, but his constant passion for everything New England can be annoying at times.

A new one I just started listening to is: The Black Guy Who Tips

The other week Adam Carolla hopped in to cameo on Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, and today Kevin Smith is having a one on one with Ace on the Adam Carolla Show. WORLD’S ARE COLLIDING!

I regularly listen to The Moth, This American Life, and Cast On: Knit Like The Wind

I alternate between podcasts and Sirius when I’m at work, but the podcasts I (try to) keep up with are:

Adam Carolla

Smodcast (although sometimes I’ll just skip ahead if I get behind on the episodes…they can have funny moments, but sometimes Smith gets on one topic and it just gets tedious)

Tech News Today

This Week in Tech

No Agenda (Adam Curry and John C. Dvorak are both hilarious and disturbing as they “uncover” the world of politics–wow, that sounds like a tagline, doesn’t it?)

Nerdist (Chris Hardwick)

Diggnation–although I suspect it will end soon as Kevin Rose says he’s going to stop doing it. I’m guessing after episode 300.

Sword & Laser

I do love threads like this, though, because they help me discover new podcasts.

Carolla’s Bill Simmons impersonation kills me every time. “Dear…Tom…Brady…I…love…y–DELETE! DELETE!”

Yeah, I get a kick out of it every time too. “DEAR ACE MAN…”

Cousin Sal has a good impression of Simmons as well, focusing on his love for Josh Freeman.

I’ve finally jumped aboard the Marc Maron train, listening to 100-110. I like his fearless interview style, but his neurosis is irritating. The more time spent on just himself, the worse the show is, but it’s clear from the 100th episode, I’m in the minority with that, and wanting to hear from listeners.

Agree with you, but don’t miss his two-parter with the great Louis C.K. (eps. 111 & 112). As former friends they discuss what went sour in their relationship. A great listen. The recent show I saw live in SF with Bobcat and many other guests just plopped (#148) and if it is as fun as it was in the room, it should be a great listen. I find Marc more fun with good company.

The upcoming How Did This Get Made? will feature The Last Airbender, so get your knives sharpened.

Also, RIP, the awesome IFC News podcast.

Check out the links in the first paragraph in the first post in the thread Zollicoffer. Plenty more WTF specific chit-chat there.

I tried listening to the Old Dogs episode of How Did This Get Made? but I only made it about 13 minutes in. Motherfuckers are some shrill motherfuckers.

Thanks for recommending Dave Chen’s solo interviews though Finnias. I like that guy and his goofy sense of humour more and more.
