“If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.”

----------PART TWO: A WORLD WITHIN----------

Lobo grins widely, adjusting his captain’s hat. The smell of salt on the air is nothing short of breathtaking. Everything about being here makes him feel… right, somehow. The creak of wooden boards under his feet, the crow of passing gulls. The misty spray of water on his face as he peers over a hand carved railing.

Cain feels a bit restless. The purpose of this side voyage still coming across as wasteful. Navigator, he thought. He had been reduced to a conspicuous passenger, with little more than a weak title to identify him. At one time, he captained his own vessel–before most of these kids were unplugged. His thoughts drifted to family, to his purpose. A purpose that still lingered, kept burning in secret while the ‘navigator’ performed his chores.

Wraith impatiently eyes the captive. Refusing to play ‘dress up’, he instead appears in full Matrix-ready gear. Out of idle curiosity, he eyes a row of docile cannons, poised to fire into the vast sea. Fuses nearly begging to be lit, sails daring to be climbed, with a dagger clenched in his teeth. But instead, he was relegated to Lobo’s cat and mouse antics. Impatience seemed to grow on the young man like kudzu.

Blaze looks on, enjoying the feeling of freedom that the open sea seemed to offer. He watches as Lobo relishes in his task, and smiles a bit. The illusions of the machine world were still pretty convincing. Even as he stares at the endless rolling waves, there seems to be no glitches, no imperfections beyond what mother nature herself would have ascribed to the billows.

Edge is perhaps the most like Lobo, enjoying the saturating circumstances. He smirks at his captive as he holds the rapier out, nearly poking into the back of the bound Monarch. The youthful would-be pirate glares at the portly prisoner, glancing to Lobo every now and then with a “Give me the word, Captain,” look in his eyes.

Though the bodies of these five men really rest in monitoring stations onboard their respective hovercraft, their minds had are linked into the construct together. Their goal, to extract information from the fat man in front of them, as he stood teetering on the edge of an old-style plank. Here in the loading program, the men are safe from Agents and rogue programs. The advantage is theirs.

Though really sedated into a coma-like state, the Monarch appears in the construct alert and very much aware of the situation. His capture and interrogation were to take place in Zion. Not in some fantasy of his captor’s making. But a Sentinel alert kept the Gilgamesh and Enkidu at a distance. And so, it was on the joint crew to ascertain Monarch’s associations, the location of his contacts, and the nature of his unnaturally powered henchman.

The fat man stood on the plank’s tip, confused and afraid, shocked into silence. No longer sure of where his mind and body rested.

“I’d like the record to reflect my vague disgust at this proceeding, O Captain, My Captain.” Cain says.

Lobo moves from his place near the wheel and crosses the wooden decking. This was the most dangerous part of the virtual world. He could stay in here for hours with no fear of interference. It was a pleasure he could rarely afford, but Gnome had built this for his birthday a few years ago and he was most greatful.

He even enjoyed the old-fashioned clothes that he wore during these outings. A knee length, sleevelss black vest with gold brocade covered a white shirt complete with a lace cravat. Black pants were tucked into high leather boots and two flintlocks were stuck into a broad sash around his middle. His Kukri joined the pistols in weighing down the belt.

“Well gentlemen, let’s see if Mr. Monarch here would like to find out what a good old-fashioned keel-hauling feels like. Been a while since we’ve had the barnacles scraped off. And Mr. Cain your disgust is duly noted.”

S.S. King’s Ransom

Wraith sat away from the other men for the time being, perching himself on one of the cannons in a low hunched position, like a vulture staring down potential prey. He looked around warily, knowing full well that this was the Construct. It still paid to be cautious, even in this place. With a slight mocking grin, hidden from view by his leather mask, he looked at the silly pirate costumes the others were wearing. What foolishness was this, anyway? he thought to himself. He sighed impatiently and waited for the interrogation to begin.

Cain grows impatient and suddenly barks, “Bullshit. Gnome, give me an exit!”

S.S. King’s Ransom

Wraith looked over at Cain, raising an eyebrow behind the goggles that overlaid his black mask. What the hell had gotten into the old man? He was being uncharacteristically impatient with the interrogation. His gaze swept slowly over the other members of the group, gaugeing their reactions to Cain’s excitement. Something was wrong…he could feel it.

The salty air reminds Edge of his life spent plugged into the power plant. For a time, he had lived on the ocean, only venturing onto shore one week out of every month for supplies and recreation. The ocean calmed him, it eased his nerves and made him feel at one with himself. To him, the virtual reality of the Matrix was more real than the gritty world he inhabits. He feels more comfortable in a world where he can make up the rules at will. Gnome created this program simply as recreation. To him and Lobo, it was Heaven.

He always boarded this ship in full regalia. He owed it that much respect. An over-sized white shirt, cinched at the wrists and streaked with stains of wood oil and gunpowder, opens to reveal his now darkly-tanned chest. A pair of black, draw-string breeches fall loosely to his knee-high leather boots, cuffs folded down. A red sash is tied high around his waist matching the red bandana wrapped up over his hair and head. Black leather gloves hold the intricately designed rapier he currently weilds. An oft-used musket hangs strapped to his back, while the scabbard for his sword dangles idly off the left side of his belt.

Edge can’t help but smile as he slowly draws the salty air into his lungs, letting it linger and filter through his system. He exhales leisurely as he prods the Monarch with the tip of his silver blade, the sharp point digging shallowly into the skin of the man’s neck.

“Shall I tie his feet, Captain?” Edge’s voice is naturally lower, more hoarse in this environment. His residual self-image in this program is always a lot rougher. Unshaven, scruffy-looking and always deeply tanned. Edge’s mind projects his image as a seasoned pirate, ready to take on whatever his Captain commands.

“Yeoman Blaze, can you ready the drag lines? We have some chum to tow.” He slaps his gloved had heavily on his tied prisoner’s shoulder, hauling him sharply backward from the extended plank, splashing him loudly onto the deck of the boat. Edge moves forward with his rapier extended in a wrist-up grip forcing the point downward, pressing onto the fat man’s chest. He looks to Lobo letting his deep satisfaction with the current setting bleed through.

SS King’s Ransom

Blaze was standing, arms crossed in front of him and leaning on the ship’s railing. He gazed onto the ocean, feeling a little blue, an appropriate feeling if there ever was one. Even though he had never experienced sea proper, having been born into the Matrix, he missed it, a feeling that he couldn’t properly explain. Staring at the big blue stretch, he wanted nothing more than take a dive in it and feel the water on his skin, eve if he knew perfectly well that it wasn’t real.

Edge called out to him to get the drag lines, and Blaze set out to do it, shuffling his feet, not happy at the interruption of his daydreaming. Throwing one last glance at the sea, and at the men tied up on the deck, he wondered if there was any virtual sharks in the water

The faint sigh of his operator is the first sign that he is indeed awake again. Cain sits up, having crossed worlds, only to still find himself onboard another ship.

“Monarch doesn’t seem to be responding,” she infomrs him. “The little game seems to be a waste of time.”

“Though I have another idea…”

Construct: S.S. King’s Ransom
(ATTN: Blunt, Ego, Eucalyptus, Unicorn)

Monarch stumbles to break free, feeling the sharp steel in his chest.

“This… isn’t real!” he screams. “Push me into the water, run me through. I don’t care! To hell with you. All of you!”

Construct: S.S. King’s Ransom

The captain closed on the prisoner and watched the cold steel press into his flesh.

“Oh it’s real enough. You can feel that metal against your skin. And should we indeed keelhaul you, you would feel the barnacles rip at your flesh and the icy salt water sting those wounds. You would feel your lungs almost burst from being under water too long and if you were under too long you would in fact die.”

He walked around his crewman’s back. The sun beat down on the black hat he wore so he removed it revealing a stark white bandanna that held back steel-grey hair. Despair clutched for his soul but he held it at bay with a resolve sharper than his mate’s cutlass.

“But we are not machines. We don’t want to do this, but we will if we have to. I will hate myself, but I have more sins than this on my back and what’s one more if it keeps Zion safe? So will you tell us what we need to know?”

His eyes pleaded with the man to use common sense.

S.S. King’s Ransom

Wraith snarled as he watched the Monarch flail about like a confused old woman. Suddenly he leaped from the cannon, hooking his arm around the mast and swinging around it fluidly to land right next to the Monarch, his ninjo-to drawn and gleaming in the bright midday sun.

“I say we cut him”, he growled in a low, raspy voice nothing like the one he used outside of the Matrix. To emphasize his point, he lowered his blade right next to the Monarch’s face, shaving off a tiny bit of stubble. Underneath his mask he grinned, eager to wound the fat old man that lay before him.

S.S. King’s Ransom

Dismayed at the boy’s display of malice Lobo barks at him. “Stand down Mr. Wraith and report to my quarters after we are done here.”

S.S. Ransom

Wraith looked up sharply, his mask hiding the sneer that took over his scarred face. He lowered his sword and backed slowly away from the Monarch, not saying anything. Then suddenly he jumped up and climbed the mast, to hang from the riggings and resume his position as silent watcher.

Construct: S.S. King’s Ransom

Edge grinned, taking in all the sudden activity. The impatience and intolerance of his teammates amused him to no end.

“Master Wraith, your efforts are appreciated, but I believe they are wasted on the likes of this scurvy lot. Let us handle this swine. It won’t take long.” With a flick of his wrist, he snaps the thin blade up, carving a three-inch curve across the Monarch’s right cheek. Blood begins to creep ever so slowly out of the wound as the bag of quivering fat winces on the deck, hands tied.

“Captain, I do believe he’s holding out on us. Let me run him through, it won’t kill him.” The eagerness in Edge’s voice is all too apparent.

S.S. Ransom / Onboard the Gilgamesh
(ATTN: ALL PLAYERS)

“To hell with all of this!” Monarch shouts, flopping around on the deck like a stranded fish. He managed to make it onto his kness painfully, and then scoots next to the railing again. Wraith, Edge, Lobo and Blaze look on as their pitiful guniea pig fight awkwardly to a standing position. The frustrated, beeding captive seemed dead set on righting himself, paying the cost in artificial sweat and bruises to do so.

“You are all wasting your time!” He choked, arms bound behind him. “I give you answers, and I never go back. That is how it works. Let Zion be wiped out, ingrates! You are nothing more than common thugs… the kind I buy and sell by the truckload.”

It becomes evident that Monarch is referring to his Matrix persona… to the wealth he holds while plugged into that reality. His sanity falls into question as his words fly out. And the lunacy is confirmed as he intently flops over the rail, sprawling awkwardly over the edge. His fat form makes for a significant splash, and his body is almost instantly submerged.

As the crew scurries to react, an eventual confirmation from Gnome is piped in to the contstruct. Always anxious, she speaks her analysis, “His signs are stable, but he isn’t waking… some kind of voluntary coma.”

The way her voice echoes is almost painful to the some of the crew, particularly, the sea-captain himself. It was a blatant reminder that this reality was indeed artificial. That despite the perfect rolling waves and the smell on the air… that it was all wiring and electrons… nothing more.

A few minutes later, the crew found themselves waking back to the cold, gray reality where they bodies had remained.

On the Enkidu, a pensive Lydia stands at the bridge window as Wraith and Blaze wake and shake themselves back to life. Derelict looks to be drinking something from a steaming cup. Monarch is still plugged in, resting with no sign of movement.

On the Gilgamesh, Lobo looks around, allowing his eyes to focus. He spots Edge, looking over Gnome’s shoulder at the trickling green bars. Cain is unconscious, plugged back in to the system for some unknown reason.

“Cain and I had an idea, Cap,” Gnome reports, hoping not to be scolded. “Rather than trick the fat boy into spilling the beans… I thought… why not load some of us up into his head?” She waits for reply. Lydia is aware of the situation as well, and is on the channel on standby, listening to the conversation.

“Word from Lock came in while you boys were out, Lobo,” the captain begins. “Monarch and his associates have been made our current priority. Finding them, bringing them back to Zion. They are risking everything we’ve worked for.”

There is trouble in her often-calm voice. “So I gave Gnome the go ahead. She put Cain into the Monarch’s head. I’m sending my boys to join him. You’re free to do likewise.”

On the Enkidu, Lydia turns to Blaze and Wraith. “Back to your seats gentelemen… there’s work to be done. And by the way… Lobo is the ranking officer, even where you are going. You get me? I have never put one of my crew in the stockade. Don’t make me change my reputation.” She seems as serious as ever. Derelict preps the two men to jack back in.

Back on the Gilgamesh, Lobo looks to Edge, as a decision is needed.

(NOTE: You will load into the construct first–the white ‘loading’ area–at which time you need to request from your operator what specific gear you are asking to be loaded with. Ships memory space makes big, powerful things too hard to come by. Be conservative. To all those who choose to go in… and this should be everyone: Post your replies to follow with the location “Construct” as your header.)

Construct

Cain paces in the loading program waiting for his backup. He double checks his black duffle.

4 explosive packs
2 .45’s with 3 clips apiece
1 Mp5 assault rifle

Everything in order he pulls a black wool cap just above his brow and waits. He chuckles to himself muttering, " Pirates."

He feels the surge of electrons as someone is jacked in.

Gilgamesh/Construct

He looks at Gnome. “That a great idea. It’ll be tough no doubt but if it needs to be done….”

He now addresses Lydia over the comlink, anger edging his voice. “We’ll go in all right but you tell that crazy boy of yours not to pull any shit or I’ll ream his butt out personally.”

He nods at Edge and reclines on his seat.

Moments later and he is surrounded by endless white. His kevlar lined black jeans, turtleneck, and engineer boots made him look like an ant in the sugar bowl. This place always unnerved him more than any other part of the digital plane. Without a frame of reference he felt vaguely lost. Shaking his head like some great horse he called upon the goddess of firepower. “Gnome, standard heavy ops loadout plus something in a pair of your biggest caliber pistols. So I guess I’ll also need a pistol shooting program too.”

Two double-barreled ten gauge shotguns with most of their barrel gone go into custom thigh holsters. Twin blued Raging Bull 454’s with five inch barrels snug into a shoulder rig. His head chopper hung handle down between his shoulder blades. His ensemble was made complete with a Benelli M4 Super 90 that he pulled off the rack. Extra shells for the double-barreled guns lined his leather belt. The ammo for the Benelli crossed his chest in a single bandolier and speed loaders for the pistols were tucked into the pockets of the bullet-proof pea coat that he pulled on last. He nodded, satisfied with his choices.

Construct

Wraith looked around the white emptiness of the Construct and smiled, tightening the black leather gloves that he was wearing. He had on his usual black leather bodysuit, with a thin layer of Kevlar inside it to ward off any low-caliber stray shots. “Derelict, you know what I need first” he said up into the air, then turned around to see the small Asian-style table upon which lay his black mask, goggles, and Damascus ninja-to.

He strapped his sword onto his back and then pulled the mask and goggles over his scarred, bald head, smiling at the fit and then thinking to himself for a moment, tapping one of his gloved fingers on his chin. He looked at the others, raising an eyebrow at all of the firepower they were loading up with, and then grinned widely beneath the black leather.

“Derelict, I need something special…General Electric M134 Minigun in 7.62 millimeter.”

Wraith clapped his hands together, and rubbed them in satisfaction as the massive autocannon appeared before him. He walked over to it and picked it up, its normally heavy frame as lightweight as a cardboard box in this place. He lifted it up before him, pointing it upwards as he turned to face the others.

“Ready when you are, gentlemen…”

Construct

Blaze opens his in the familiar white space, wearing his usual jeans and boots. He picks up his hooded sweatshirt from the table and slips it on, instantly getting the feel for action that comes with when he’s wearing these clothes. His nunchucks are already waiting for him on the table and he slips them in his belt.

“Derelict, send me a gun, there’s no reasons the old guys should be the only ones with some firepower. I’ll have…ah, let’s be classical here. Give me a M16 menu, with large ammo, and I’ll have a side order of USP on top of that.” The weapons are in his hands a few seconds later. He tucks the handgun in the back of his jeans and straps the rifle to his shoulders.

“Okay, what are we waiting for? We’re not gonna spend the day here, unless anyone want to grill some marshmallows so I suggest we get moving. Time’s against us.”

He gives a look at Wraith.

“Dude, how many times have I told you? That mask makes you look like you’re on your way to a S and M club.”
