Every forum in existence has had a “what game/movie would you want a sequel for?” thread. It’s the law. But I’m gonna ask something different:
What game would you want a sequel for, but you have a feeling they either wouldn’t capture the feel of the original, or wouldn’t learn from the mistakes the first game had?
I’ll give one, really easy: Tron 2.0. The game was damned fun, and it brought the modern computer things like the Internet to the world of Tron that was damned good. It ended on a cliffhanger, and I was damned upset that we’d never find out what was going on.
However… I’m glad they won’t make a sequel, because I don’t think they would correct the mistakes that the first one had.
For example: If you never played it, Tron 2.0 had this nasty little thing where the enemy lightcycles were extremely difficult to beat. They weren’t impossible to beat, but most people that played it experienced a least a couple times when an enemy lightcycle pulled off a turn that just wasn’t possible for a human.
When people complained about it, the developers did allow a player to skip a lightcycle battle, provided they tried it a few times. The problem, of course, was that such a feature caused a bug to happen, preventing the game from being played anymore. If the same developer did a sequel, it’d happen again.,
So whats your “Game I Want A Sequel For, But No Thanks”?
Chrono Cross. I don’t trust Square far as I can throw ‘em these days. I’d rather the series stay dead than for Square in its current form to do anything to taint that series’ legacy.
SHOGO: Mobile Armour Division. Probably the only game to pull off the feel of fast moving giant anime robots correctly. Rumour was that Monolith was making a sequel, but doing it as a third person Splinter Cell-esque espionage game (with giant robots), and every once in a while they trot out screen shots that show one of the robots from the game to show off the latest version of the engine.
FEAR also had a couple of Shogo references (Armacham Technology being the chief manufacturer of the robots in Shogo)
I’d love to have a Knights of the Old Republic game that lived up to the first. But after the exercise in dullness that was the second one, I don’t know that I want to see a third. I’m sure it will happen anyway, but without Bioware at the helm, I don’t hold out much hope.
I hadn’t heard that. I had just assumed that they’d have their plate full with the Mass Effect trilogy. If they’re doing KOTOR 3 in-house, I’ll be thrilled.
Portal. However, part of Portal’s perfection is how short and self-contained it is. Any sequel, even if made by the exact same crew, would fall short of those all-too-few hours of sheer brilliance.
That said, every game produced by Valve from now on should have some small reference to Portal. Cryptic cake-related messages scrawled on the wall, a companion cube on an out-of-reach rack in a warehouse. Just a little something to make us smile.

Holy shit, fantastic call. Off topic, but do you know how to play that game on a new computer without errors and the like?
I’d love to see a true sequel to The Neverhood (I’ve never played Skullmonkeys but I’ve heard from many people it’s more of an offshoot). I loved the puzzles, the whole history of the world it took place in and of course the claymation style. It was really funny too. My friends and I loved hitting Klaymen over and over again in the beginning of the game. One of the few games I was sad to stop playing at the end. But I doubt they can top the original if they can even gather up enough money and find an audience to do so.

That had been floating around for ever, but this was a more recent and specific announcement. But I haven’t heard anything more about it since, so maybe it was all hot air.

Same, and I’m a pretty big Fallout fan. Unfortunately, it became another one of the “nerds with no fucking lives have to scrutinize every single detail because it’s NOT EXACTLY THE SAME AS ITS PREDECESSORS!!!” properties. Maybe that helped BethSoft realize that they’d better not screw it up. Who knows?
