Family Guy is to The Simpsons as Scary Movie is to Airplane.
The people who quote Family Guy way too much need to be put down. Hard.
The Simpsons’ prime seasons episode can be viewed over and over and you’ll discover something new almost every time.
One of my favorite subtle lines is when Seymour Skinner says something weird and you can barely hear the Superintendent mutter “What an odd remark.” The first time I heard that I couldnt stop laughing.
You can only watch the Kool Aid man burst through a wall so many times before it gets old. And fuck those people who still laugh just because they feel they have to.
And I can recall at least one episode from Futurama and Simpsons that had me on the verge of tears.
Family Guy has its moments.
Futurama/Simpsons has whole episodes.

That, in the end, is my point. I have no problem with Family Guy being what it is. Neither does Seth McFarlane. The people up in arms because the show isn’t being spoken of in the same breath as The Simpsons just need to realize that.
I don’t think there are a lot of people who are up in arms because “Family Guy” isn’t mentioned with “The Simpsons.” You can see in this thread that the folks who hate the show hate it with passion, while the folks who like it just go on liking it knowing precisely why they enjoy the program. There isn’t much defense for the show because it’s not warranted. When it comes to humor you either laugh or you don’t. If you don’t dig the pop culture stuff then you won’t like “Family Guy” and nothing can change that. It would be like trying to convince Nathan Lane about the benefits of vagina. You could go on and on all day but in the end he’s just not gonna like vagina.

No, not here at CHUD, there aren’t. But go to any other forum that has a heavy traffic of people aged 16-29 and you WILL find more people than not that think it’s the “best show on TV” and it’s “better than the Simpsons ever was” and other examples of gross hyperbole. Making a topic saying Simpsons is better than Family Guy is basically flamebait.
I love Family Guy. But the show has no substance. It’s rock candy. That alone doesn’t make it as good as Simpsons or even South Park. But the show’s biggest fans don’t care. It makes a Transformers joke or re-enacts the entire end scene from A New Hope, and it’s nothing short of friggin’ genius.
Like Cobra said earlier in this thread, obnoxious fans are the reason why Family Guy (and any other massively overrated product) gets hate. If the show didn’t have fans constantly sucking Seth MacFarlane off, no one would really care about this “debate.”

That basically sums things up perfectly.
And a lot of people confuse “don’t like” and “don’t think it’s funny” with “hate”. There’s nothing worth hating. I used to like the show, but I outgrew it. It stopped being funny for me, old episodes or new.
There’s the rub. The show’s fans think we hate it because we don’t love it as much as they do. Much like the people who were pissed off at Roger Ebert because he only gave Fellowship of the Ring three stars; it was a positive review, but it wasn’t positive enough.
That’s nothing compared to what they did, and still do, to Roeper for giving it a thumbs down.
They never really showed Family Guy that regularly on Australian TV and its only just come back on with what i assume are the new episodes.
I always thought it was funny but clearly it has no other objective than where the next laugh is coming from. I dont think it’s as good as Futurama or The Simpsons in it’s day, but i do I think it’s funnier than the last few Simpsons episodes i saw
There is no way in hell i would want to watch a Family Guy marathon where, i must say, i have a few Simpson-a-Thons under my belt.
They pair Family Guy up with American Dad over here. Is that still running or has it been cancelled yet?
American Dad’s still running. There are times when it’s funnier than the Family Guy ep that precedes it.

I find Family Guy hugely entertaining, but it doesn’t have anything resembling depth, and I have never been compelled to watch it religiously.
I’d still take it any day over Futurama, a show which started out quite clever and witty, but descended pretty quickly into an onslaught of in-jokes and general incoherence. With the constant pandering to the likes of Star Trek fans, it had a typical air of geek exclusivity about it, and unlike The Simpsons, it made no effort to be accessible to more casual viewers. In the end about as tolerable as a Terry Pratchett novel. I can see why it was cancelled.
