I’m surprised no one has wanted to discuss this yet. A very good “welcome back” episode that manages to set the stage for the coming episodes and provided a fun B-story about the party (it’s interesting to watch how shows deal with having to provide in-show advertising (30 Rock and Arrested Development come to mind)). I really liked Ari’s storyline of trying to get Vince back (and revelling in the homoeroticism of it all).
Also, did anyone else walk away with the impression that Paul Haggis stole the idea for the Black Donnellys based on Five Towns?
I thought it was a great episode. Fun and light, and less of a doom-n-gloom approach when it comes to Vinny’s career. The choice to fast-forward a bit was a good call, and Carla Gugino was very good. Best of all: No Debbie Mazar in sight.
Good episode, I can’t wait to see how Five Towns turns out for Drama. Lloyd and Ari were good as usual. Nice start, I expect the laughs and the big story arc to be set in motion next week.
Yeah, man, when I saw a commercial for Black Donnelly’s, the first thing that came to mind was Drama’s pilot. I hope it goes well for him, but at the same time, I kinda know it will go south pretty quick.
I hope Gugino sticks around for a while, if only to knock Debi Mazar off the opening credits.
It almost seems as if they’re forcing too much Ari on us. I want more Ari, in fact I’d rather watch Aritourage, but it needs to feel less forced. Because of his popularity, they’ve made him prominent in all the ad spots and posters but I don’t know if it works. They need to step it up this season.
I had an awful dream last night where Kevin Dillon died of a heroin overdose or something, and I was so upset that Johnny Drama was dead. Thankfully when I woke up I realized it was all just a dream.
With Ari bolstering his own agency, Vince felt like he wasn’t going to get the personalized touch that Ari had given him previously in his career. Ari had turned into every other agent who thinks of his clients like a brand instead of as an individual. So Ari got the boot, hence why Ari is now trying to woo Vince back with Vince’s dream project.
I’ll agree that Ari is a bit forced in there, but I don’t think that he’s any more forced than he was in Season 2. The reason he’s become more prominent I think is because he is the gate keeper into the business side of Hollywood, and I don’t think anyone would disagree that that is the best part of the show. I do think it will be interesting to see if they go an episode or two without him, but since this was the kick off of the season (or second half I guess), they needed to get him in there to show he’s still around. Also, I’m hoping they don’t make Gugino a complete puss just to make a point about how great Ari is. Right now it’s looking like the only reason the guys keep her around is because Vince wants to fuck her.

Oh right. I vaguely remember that pitch meeting re: the Vince brand. Why am I remembering something about a botched job. Didn’t Ari fuck up some movie that Vince really wanted to do. Was that the Benecio del Toro role they talked about in this ep?

I’m the same way . . . the show really is “Sex and the City” for guys . . . Light and frothy, with every “conflict” being solved within a couple episodes with no repercussions.
I enjoy the cast and some occasional stand-alone moments, but few moments stay with me more than 5 minutes after the episode airs. It has just as much substance as Everybody Loves Raymond, only with way more boobies and cursing. Like Tina Fey said on 30 Rock, “It’s not HBO . . . It’s just TV.”

Aquaman 2 screwed that for Vince. The latest botched job was the Ramones movie.
Not the first episode of Entourage that I found myself checking the clock to see how much time remained before the first family of television came on (I go Entourage pre-Sopranos, call it delayed gratification). The show, apart from occasional brilliance from Dillon and Piven, continues to bore me. The ep. also reminded me of one of my biggest disappointments within the show: the unabashed proliferation of product placement. Network TV and their shameless corporate pandering I can come to terms with, it’s their essence. But does HBO really need Vinnie and the boys to be sipping on Buds, etc. to fit the bill? The comparison with Sex and the City seems a good fit, but my knowledge of SATC is proudly woeful. Can anybody tell me if they utilized some of the product placements in SATC?
I would pay money to see Benicio in Medellin, minus Paul Haggis (speaking of-“Five Towns” billboard a nod to his Black Donnely’s?)
