The Next Assignment
(ATTN: RATH)

The following morning, you are resting in your study, contemplating your next mystery letter to your nemesis.

You are interrupted.

In your doorway stands a tall, slim woman of Asian descent, pale-skinned and exotically beautiful.

“I will get to the point,” she starts abruptly. “I know who you are and what you do.”

She pauses briefly to let you digest her comments.

“Your contract with Mr. Steadman is over. Consider this meeting your resignation. You will now for me.”

She paces into the room, seeming to glide rather than walk. In the doorway where she stood are two thugs… Triads if your instincts serve you as usual.

“I am Linh Lao,” “You may call me Madam. I assume you are wondering how I expect you to work for me… freely.”

She grins knowingly.

“Your attempt on Marco Capella was documented by my men. Not only does his syndicate want to find you, but they will soon find you even MORE undeniable. I have arranged it so.”

She waits for your reply, and is seated at a chair in your office.

Coldstone
(ATTN: EUCALYPTUS, GAC, BLUNT, WACO, WHITEHEAD)

Dawn has come. Like a hawk, Othello has monitored every entry into the area from the rooftop. You watched as JT brought your ally to the house, and made sure he was cleared for entry withno problem.

Palooka was relieved to arrive unscathed. And came bearing gifts of gratitude. Heavy boxes, weighing down the trunk of JT’s ride.

Several of the mooks (to clarify: 12 mooks, 10 Black disciples, you, Palooka, Tivoli) helped drag in the two large containers. They were subsequently armed with the contents, all machineguns and the like.

A strange calm comes with the morning air. The sense that the imminent arrival is at hand. You can sense the tension with your men, and in the ranks of the Disciples, free-flowing nervously, while watching the perimiter like trained hawks.

Meanwhile, several blocks away, Vinnie, Virgil and Lou ride together in the backseat of one six Capella family cars. Sleek and bulletproof (think the limo from Desperado), these vehicles cruise slowly toward the industrial part of town.

The three of you, leading a pack of soldiers (numbering in the area of twenty-five), are fully aware of the trial that is to come.

Your career, your “family”, your personal honor… hell, even yur reputation is riding on the outcome of your mission. Tivoli’s leaks have lead to multiple losses for the family, and to each of you personally. Only with his head on a plate can you resume business.

Your men are armed as well, and are as current, out of sight of any of Steadmen’s men. They are not yet aware of your location, but are sure as hell to be expecting you, anxiously.

((I strongly suggest that both groups, Othello, Palooka and company, as well as Virgil, Vinnie and Lou plan your stragegies with each other and myself over e-mail or PM. this chapter needs to be played realistically. Remember the combat notes above. There are plenty of goons on both sides as fodder. Play it up, but be fair. This Chapter won’t end until this confrontation does, do keep it moving. Email me PRIOR to anything you think is risky…))

Diversions
(ATTN: Katanga, Fett, Verbal, Voltes, Poxy)

Roman and Frank have taken cover. After the smoke cleared, it became evident that your assailant was charred toast in the tripwire explosion. You have searched Bosca’s house from top to bottom, and find little by way of evidence.

As you are preparing to leave, you get another call. It is from Ernesto, one of your men at the mansion. His news is the worst possible…

Back at the mansion, while scouring and rounding up potential suspects, the trio of Tony, Dino and Paulie found no conclusive results. The shock of an explosion that never came was soon overshadowed, as the three of you returned outside to find Don Capella and the surrounding henchmen all dead. Seven men in total, shot from above. One shot each. (not any kind of homage to the Beltway Ass-Pirate) Underneath a car you see one survivor. Badly shaken, crying…

Ernesto is reporting the news to Roman over his cellphone, while peeing his pants at the same time.

The murderer could be lingering in the area. There is no way to be certain. The only sure thing is the feeling you have that the pager message was a red herring to get the Boss out in the open.

Shit, it seems, has happened.

This is a description post of the warehouse only, for the “coldstone” section of the chapter. It overrides any other descriptions previosuly given.

A three story buidling, with a core like a doughnut that is open air all the way from ground floor to the roof. Catwalks and storage shelves lined with boxes of books and magazines fill the building. Tivoli is securs on the ground floor, only players that are inside know this, the rest need to roleplay fairly.

The roof access, front door, and two large docking doors in the rear are the ONLY access. No basement, no sewer lines, no bullshit.

The perimiter is guarded by 10 Black Disciples, hardcore gang-members turned mercs. They are not typical mooks.

Regular union mooks litter the interior of the warehouse.

From the roof, one can see in all directions for a few blocks. it is a clear morning, around 10:00am.

The Next Assignment

Forbes grins.

“Far be it from me to deny the demands of such a beautiful woman. What did you have in mind?”

Diversions

Roman drops his cell to the floor. Tobiasi can hear the panicked ramblings of Ernesto on the other end. Roman makes the sign of the cross and murmurs a prayer for Don Marco Capella’s soul.

“Let’s go.” Roman says. The two men drive off and as the stream of black smoke vanishes in the distance, Roman turns to Tobiasi.

“The Don is dead.” He lets his words seep into Tobiasi while he flips open a cigarette case and lights one up.

“I want him buried in three days.” Roman sets the open case on the dash. “After that is done we will set ourselves on the path to war. Do you understand this…Consigliere?”

Roman lets his promotion and that of Frank stir in the smoke-filled car and gazes at the changing scenery as they re-enter COLDSTONE.

diversions

Frank lights up a cigarette. He is deathly quiet.

'Tutto il dado. Vedrò… a quello.

The Next Assignment

As the woman called Madam begins to speak, McCready interupts.

“Oh wait. I forgot to mention one thing, Madam.”

She raises an eyebrow.

“The man you seek, the man called Echelon, is dead.”

He dives under the desk and removes the pistol hidden there. He fires at the lights in the room, plunging his study into darkness, and waits for the Triads to strike.

Diversions

Tony was outside now, alert as ever and surveying the dead bodies.

The Don is dead…and we couldn’t have been any stupider…they wanted him out in the open…what a fuckin’ joke..

He pulled out his zippo and a cigarette, lit it, and inhaled the smoke. It was a cold night, but it was time to go back to Coldstone.

“Listen, Dino…sorry about me pussyin’ out back there…I didn’t know what to think. I saw Death in that nightclub and I wasn’t about to fight him again in that mansion.”

I’m just a pussy, Tony thought. Fuckin’ bailin’ out on my paisans…well, never again. It’s time to earn my keep.

And with that, he threw the smoke down, stepped on it, and went off to leave with Dino.

I’m gonna avenge the Don.

An audible sigh of disappointment is all that is head from Linh Lao as she deftly lands on top of the desk, plunging an unseen long knife through the desktop into the opening.

Her two henchmen enter the room, quickly riddling the desk with bullet holes from their AK74-S’s.

There is additional shouting in the hallway, as more feet are set in motion. The language is familiar to McCready… Chinese.

<<GAMEMASTER EDIT>>

((This post takes place in the mid-morning, with the impending threat of a sniper still in the air stillneeding to be addressed once the group in the mansion decides how to act… and if the single survivor, Ernesto is worth saving. The story cannot be advanced into the evening, ignoring these crucial story points. Sorry for the trouble.))

Diversions

(ATTN Katanga and Fett)

((Without undue speeding, the trip will take you a few posts to elapse. Feel free to exchange conversation as you continue, make phone calls, reload, all that good stuff while in transit.))

The presents from Palooka having been distributed and the men sent to their posts, Othello took a moment to bask in the relative silence. He heard car horns in the distance, the faint bellow of a freighter’s whistle from the direction of the harbor, idle nervous conversation trickling up from below.

Taking a drag on his cigar he mentally prepared for the task at hand. He’d always enjoyed a good gunfight; the bite of cordite in the air, the whine of bullets, and even the pain of wounds were like old friends. It felt like this one was going to be especially tasty.

He smiled and the other men on the roof felt chills run up their spines as they saw the look in his eyes and began to understand why this one was called the Mad Moor. He pushed off of the low wall he had been sitting up against and took up his rifle. He turned around and began scanning the streets below for the dark cars. They always drove the same damn dark cars.

The Next Assignment

The bullets rocked McCready’s desk, denting the several layers of reenforced steel lying under the wood, wearing it down. Soon they would break through. Despite the two inches of steel lying in his right eye from that bitch’s blade, McCready knew he had to move quickly.

With a grunt, he pulled his eye away from the woman’s knife. Blood began to spurt and the pain was intense, but McCready could not tend to it now. He needed both hands. He had to get to the “Batcave”.

The home he lived in was old, and thus filled with secret passages. The closest one, behind the bookcase on the right wall of his study, lead to exactly where he needed to go.

Forbes rolled out from behind his desk and crouched up against the shelf just as the bullets smashed through the desk. One of them nicked his leg. Even though Echelon was dead, his discipline was not, and thus, Forbes made no sound.

Fortunatly, the bullet that wounded him was among the last round of the automatic weapon. The moment McCready heard the magazine crash to the ground, he rolled over to the bookshelf and grabbed Adam Smith’s “The Wealth of Nations”.

Madam heard the bookshelf swing open and whirled around. Her knife flew through the air, towards the passage. It embedded in a first edition of a Hardy Boys adventure novel.

She cursed and ordered her lieutenants to open new fire on the bookshelf. Their bullets met more reinforced steel, only this time, they would not be able to break through.

In the dank passageway, Forbes ran to his inner sanctum, going there for the first time as McCready and not Echelon. The house’s self destruct sequence was armed. He had twenty minutes.

And all he could think about was Marie…

The New Assignment

((Please don’t role play for my character! I do that.))

Without hesitation, Lao eyes the bookshelf. She runs her fingers along the tops of the books… pausing only to remove her knife.

Then a click… She orders several of the nearby henchmen to join her, and with a ferocious speed the group follows his path.

((Bear in mind the Gamemaster reserves the right to post damage to named characters, as well as edit lines of plot. Not that I would do it to be a spoiled sport of course, but in the interest of fairness, multiple, uncounterable actions should not be used. Myself included, of course.))

[Sorry, one final detail]

Even though it was not Christmas, the Russian Dance from “The Nutcracker” seemed to suddenly appear out of nowhere everywhere in the house. An elaborate system of hidden speakers blasted the music at a high decible, momentarily confusing the many Triads swarming into the opulent home.

The Next Assignment

Forbes can hear the footsteps pounding behind him. He remembers his mentor’s words from his days in the IRA.

Boy, you can fuck with us. You can fuck with the Brits. You can fuck with the n----rs. And you can fuck with the Italians. But don’t you EVER fuck with the Triads. They are unfuckablewith. Cross them, and they’ll come back one billion strong. Hit us hard enough, and we’ll eventually give up. But the Triads…the Triads never give an inch. They just keep coming.

Forbes stops and throws his pistol towards the oncoming footsteps. Before the bullets can hail, he screams:

“I was a fool. I am unarmed. I know it is not possible for you to forgive me…but let me repay you. Let me live, and the services of Echelon are yours…for as long as you like. Please.”

He drops to his knees in the darkness and waits to die.

His last thought is:

That was fucking pathetic. But I hope it works. For her sake. For my boys’ sake.

DIVERSIONS

Paulie feels like he’s been punched in the gut.

I brought him out here. I left him out here.

A whimper from beneath a near-by car startles him from his revery. Pistols in both hands in an instant, he rushes over to the vehicle, sees a scuffed leather shoe. He bends over and yanks on the leg for all he’s worth.

It’s the bodyguard he pistol-whipped earlier.

“Sweet merciful Christ!” he hollers. “You really are a worthless piece of shit.” Then, he grins. “Well, maybe not entirely worthless.”

He turns back and shouts towards Dino. “I think we got us the Zapruder film here.”

As Dino approaches Paulie with an indifferent expression, he looks at a surviving bodyguard hiding underneath a black Beamer. The stupid fuck is scared shitless and stinks like piss.

Dino motions to Tony to get closer as well.

“Alright, jumping fuck flash, get the sumbitch and we’ll cover your ass.”

Diversions

As Tobiasi steers the vehicle towards the off-ramp closing the distance between them and their fractured, wounded crew; Roman rolls over the seat into the back. He pulls the backseat cushions down to gain trunk access. Tobiasi keeps one eye on the road and one on the rearview mirror. Roman pulls an HK94 9mm assault rifle, and then tosses a handful of 9mm clips into the front seat.
“Be ready for an army,” he grumbles to Frank.
Roman cracks the windows in the backseat and locks and loads his rifle taking a defensive crouch on the floorboards.

Frank takes a drag of his cigarette and watches Roman’s activity in the mirror. Using one hand, he pulls out a 9mm from his inside left holster, while controlling the wheel with the other hand. For two seconds, the wheel is free, as he loads and cocks back the gun in record speed. The gun is reholstered, and Frank’s hand is back on the wheel. He reaches for the gun in the right inside holster. Again, two seconds, and the weapon is ready. He reholsters it carefully and moves his hand to his back, making sure his wakizashi is secured. He is prepared.

‘Ready.’
