One thing I decided from the get-go:
I’d rather just make single life jokes than use it as a podium to bag on my ex. That just seems awfully bitter and spiteful, and I don’t have any ill will toward my her at all. She’s a good gal and I still care about her, but we just didn’t work out in the end, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Plus, I’m pretty certain that you can hear women’s vaginas smacking shut like car doors whenever a guy gets up on stage and starts howling about his ex.

I’ll do a few open mics, but my first official show will be sometime mid-November - it’s the graduation show for the class I’m currently taking. Writing and developing is pretty much taken from real-life stuff. I develop jokes by adding my own twist to it, but mostly I agree with my friend’s statement that “you don’t find the joke, the joke finds you”. That seems to be how I’ve come up with most of my material - something happens, I think “Hey, that’d make a great joke/anecdote/whatever”, write it down, and then just let it go and see what happens. |
That’s so awesome, big Jake!
I hope you have the right influences, tho. Goes without saying, I should hope, that you need to listen to Andrew Dice Clay’s first few albums. Talk about presence!
And someon’e gotta lead the way and bring smashing watermelons back.

You should totally check out UCB. Even at their worst, the crowds are never the typical cold LA open mic crowd. It feels very much like a community, still.
And like you Jake, I am getting into it! I’ve been doing sketch comedy for about three years, but since failing out of Los Angeles I’ve been working on it as a way to stay in the game until I get back there.
I’m totally comfortable on stage and all that. Where I’m finding the challenge is the polar opposite direction the writing goes in. The genesis of stuff is the same, but the next stages are hard. Editing dialogue is easy compare to editing an idea.
I heard bad stuff about UCB (mostly that they can be more brutal than the rest due to the whole “comedy hipster” element), but I’m still going to go check them out.
When I said “live at UCB and Largo” in my earlier post I meant just hang out there a lot and absorb everything. Try to become a familiar face there in the crowd, but don’t try to perform there until you’re ready, of course. When you do finally perform there, they may go easier on you if the crowd and some of the comics know who you are.
Chris Hardwick says repeatedly on the Nerdist podcast that starting out in stand up in LA is about the hardest place to do it. Good luck.
Again, this is not my advice. Just what I’ve heard from people like Hardwick.

Jake can learn a lot about broads from Andrew Dice Clay. OOOOOH!
Sketch comedy has a whole different feel than stand-up, for both the performers and the audience.

I plan on getting laid in the future, so I ain’t doing anything remotely ADC-ish.

Yeah, I mean I’d always heard that too. And there’s definitely a douchebag quotient. but we’ve done some shows there and always had really good feedback (anecdotal I know. But we’re complete outsiders there and even other comedians there were *mostly* cool). Eyeball Kid was right back there though, anywhere people know your face is a huge plus when performing

out of curiosity who are your inspirations, Jake?
Hicks, Oswalt (and the rest of the Comedians of Comedy gang), Carlin, Stanhope, etc.
I think it’s incredible that Jake is a stand up comedian. I want to see clips, ASAP. That is seriously cool, congratulations Jake/other comedian Chewers
I don’t think the board needs a STAND UP forum. IMHO, it’s excessive. I think if you start a STAND UP thread and stick it in the HUMOR forum, you’ve got the topic covered.
That’s just MHO, and I want to politely offer it up for consideration. I don’t like seeing the list of sub forums grow unnecessarily (though obviously that’s a subjective determination and I am not a mod)
EDIT: Not to be squeamish, but I’d also rather not see the message about Uncle Mitch “jerking himself off” every time I load up the board. I know that kind of stuff gets posted in threads, but I feel like the forum descriptions are a different matter. Again this is 100% subjective but I did want to share my thoughts

Friendly reminder:
Well done on point 1, but the rest of this post belongs in either the nonexistent Forum Recommendations thread or in your blog. If you’re going to post in every thread, you need to be extra careful to remain on topic from now on.

Fair enough, Trevor. I posted here just because I couldn’t think of another place to share my opinion. I was going to ask for an alternative, but I guess there is no place to do so. For the record, is CHUD not interested in our thoughts on the forum going forward? I was not trying to bitch merely share an opinion on a board related formating decision. In the past fedback has usually been welcome in one form or another (such as the RULES DISCUSSION AND CRITIQUES thread)
I was not trying to go off topic (I felt maybe the thread itself would be best since it was the early stages of the new forum and that was the only actively discussed thread in it). I was doing my best to be constructive
Would the THINGS YOU WANT CHUD.COM TO DO thread be a good fit for my issue?
I will stop talking about this now since you’ve stated such discussion is off topic. If you have any insights into the questions I’ve raised though, could you perhaps PM me a reply instead?
And once again, very cool Jake! Good work. Crowd speaking is a tough skill to acquire, much less crowd humor
One of the things I’ve learned about hanging around the scene for the past few months is that there are a LOT of people who are like “I should do this! I’m funny!” If you have to actually qualify your statement like that, chances are you ain’t got it.
Then there was the drunk guy from Pacoima at a club in the Valley who came up, sat down on my friend’s purse, got pissed when I moved it, and then was like “I’m funny, but I can’t tell most of my jokes because they’re racist.”
…While I was seated next to a black comedienne.
We just sort of looked at each other and I gave the guy a sharp “Nice to meet you. See you around.” So many weirdos that hang around comedy clubs. I know comedians are generally weird/damaged motherfuckers by default (haywhatup), but the hangers-on are just as bad.
You have to worry about someone whose repertoire of jokes is primarily composed of “racial humor”
I’m funny like Norm McDonald roasting Bob Saget. I don’t think there’s a place for me on stage. Not that I’m afraid of the stage or anything, but I know enough to know I don’t belong there.
