I picked up the first season because I like Buck Rogers and probably had a nostalgic memory of the series.
It is fucking hard to sit through any of the episodes though.
I attempted to watch reruns of this recently just to see if I could at least get a laugh out of it and even though it definitely has those moments, it’s such an exhaustingly trite show that I found myself unable to sit through more than five minutes of it.
This show along with the original Battlestar Galactica proved that even when I was a kid, I had an extremely low tolerance for genre television. I’ve continued that finicky viewing habit by keeping away from pretty much all sci-fi shows outside of ‘Twilight Zone’, ‘Night Gallery’, ‘Outer Limits’ and the stand alone episodes of the ‘X-Files’.
Just took a look at some Deep Discount prices -
Buck $20
Battlestar $70
Uh… I know it’s hard to beat Dirk Benedict, but surely these shows aren’t that far apart quality-wise.

Buck just dropped in price. It was up around $60. You get the complete series, so I can’t really complain about getting the inferior Season 2 along with it it. For 19.99, it’s like a bonus feature. Or a “bone us” feature.
I loved Fall Guy as well (since I wanted to be a stunt man when I was a kid), but I’m still waiting for my “Matt Houston” and “Vega$” DVD sets.

Buck is worth $20. The pilot movie is still fun. Love that Bond-like opening.

What I couldn’t understand was, if computers take over fighter maneuvers during dogfights, why do the fighters have manual controls at all? Or pilots, for that matter? I wondered the same thing with Galactica; if the Cylons are robots, why put robots in the fighters? Just make robot fighters.
Yes, even in my youth, I asked questions like that.
Chris Wood, I agree that StreetHawk should be on dvd. If Blue Thunder another cool action series can be released on dvd so can Rex Smith’s supercycle series. They should also release Heather Thomas’s Cyclone film. It also features a High Tech Supercycle.
Greg David, The Cylons originally were lizard like aliens inside metalic suits. This was likely dropped for cost, as well as killing robots even in a science fiction series was less violent then killing living beings. Anyway, when your hero just destroyed 3 enemy fighters, it is cooler to actually see the faces of the enemy pilots before their ships get destroyed.
Matt Houston also should be on DVD. Whatever happened to Pamela Hensley? She was Ardala on Buck Rogers and Matt Houston’s sidekick and then she seems to have disappered.

The concept of the Cylons as lizard-like beings inside armored suits was only in the novels, though. This was never even mentioned on the show, so I tend to discount it. And yes, I’m sure the whole robot thing was just so they could kill them wholesale every week without worrying about the morality of it all. Kind of like how on Buck Rogers, the heroes would never shoot a guy on the ground, but the minute he stepped into a spaceship, they could blow his ass up.
At least there were no magic parachutes.

My most fond Buck memory was my best friend and I watching the premiere of the second season with Hawk’s introduction. We were pleading with Hawk on screen to go ahead and shoot Buck for accidentaly killing his wife.

The second season was shitty, heinous semi-Star Trek. The first sesason had potential, and really wasn’t any dumber than more respectable “grownup” TV dramas of the time, like Quincy or some shit. Handled properly, it could have become the sci-fi Rockford Files.
