This is going to be a big one. I think much of the setup of this season is going to start paying off now. TV Guide says something like “Angel must choose between saving one friend’s life, and the lives of thousands.” So, the big question, I guess, is will Fred die?
Pro:
She just got together with Wes, who has been obsessing over her for 3 years. Killing her off now would be a classic Whedon maneuver, and set up lots of Wes-pain.
They haven’t been able to come up with much for her to do as a living character.
Con:
The WB promos strongly suggest Fred’s death, and they’re almost allways misleading.
The creator of Buffy is going to kill off his last remaining first-string female character? Sounds unlikely.
Everything in Angel’s past suggests that he would never abandon a friend for the greater good (whereas Wesley would in a heartbeat). But this is also the thing that makes me wonder. IF Angel made the decision to sacrifice Fred, it would be pretty fucking huge, and would play well into the ideas about morality they’ve been setting up all season. Definitely interesting to consider.

Herc over at AICN gave it five stars and called it Joss’ best Buffyverse episode since “Once More With Feeling.” Can’t wait.

There’s no denying it: Joss episodes are just stronger, punchier, and edgier than everyone else’s.

Nightmare before Christmas Reference! Hoorah! And hey, that Chistmastown guardian dude, is he supposed to be familiar? Cause he wasn’t in the first 3 seasons. Was he in the 4th?
Just when you think that they won’t be able to top themselves, they give you an episode like this. The stuff between Fred and Wes was incredibly moving. I can’t think of a single bad moment in this episode. If Angel doesn’t live on, at least it will go out on the highest of notes.
Is Fred dead or not, though? Feels like they might find a way to save her. I mean, given the fact that we don’t really see Angel/Spike’s decision, one wonders if they have a trick up their sleeve. And obviously Ms. Acker is going to be around for a few more episodes (presumably until the end of the season…)
This seems too close to the Jasmine plotline, though.
Not really. The Jasmine plotline was Cordy trying to fool everyone. Killing Cordy was never really a concept. Now they might have no choice but to kill Fred.
And there’s also repercussion on the actions of Knox and Gunn.
Shall I say best episode of Angel this season? If not ever?

Whedon rules, almost too many great moments to count.
I f’n knew Knoxx would do something after the Wes/Fred thing. And Gunn better watch out. Wes had no problem killing his dad and if he finds out about that shipment we may see the old Wes after his friends betrayed him.
It’s still pretty close–demonic entity inhabiting one of the major characters.
Presumably next week we’ll pick up seconds after this episode ends.
Also: I’m pretty sure they’ll save Fred. Because if they don’t, I will hunt down and kill Joss Whedon.
Goddammit, this show is great. I’m not at all looking forward to Wed. without this. And Wes shot the guy right the fuck in the leg. Wonderful, wonderful times.
